Being a fan of both Canon and Nikon. I ventured back to Nikon and picked up the Nikon D300s. It wasn't a bad camera (took some nice pictures using it), but I really got it because the Canon 7D wasn't avaiable through AAFES where I usually order from (since I'm retired military). Well, to make a long story short, I returned the Nikon and ordered a Canon 7D (it is on backorder, but its worth the wait). I don't know, I really didn't see how the D300s was really any better than my Canon 50D. So hopefully the 7D will deliver better results then the Nikon D300s. How does the 7D compare to the 50D in all around performance? I still don't get why Nikon sticks with only 12.3 megapixels and still charges more money then Canon cameras with higher megapixel rates. If you wish, please go to my Flickr account and tell me what you think of some of the images taken with the Nikon D300s as compared to the Canon 50D I currently own.

Congrats. I've heard about the great deal on the 7D through AAFES.

It's all about the senseless megapixel war. After hitting a high of 10MP I realized that 4-6 is all that the "average joe" really needs, so 10-12 is great. Birders enjoy the extra MP of course.

Good points about those who take photos of birds and nature in general. I'm a real big fan of outdoor photography and enjoy blowing up some of my landscape photos. So the higher megapixel rate is something that I find very helpful. The difference between Nikon and Canon (at least in my eyes and I may be way out in left field on this), Nikon just seems to kill you with a much higher price when you look at the higher megapixel cameras they offer. Canon does a better job at giving you more of an affordable camera with a higher megapixel count (Canon 50D and Canon 7D). One day I will get a full frame DSLR and the Canon 5DMKII seems to be the right entry level full frame DSLR for me. Although, the Sony A900 looks good also.

Take Care and May God bless everyone this Thanksgiving day!

from the reviews i've seen IQ on the D300s is better than the 7D.. i'll never own a 1.6x body again, so it doesnt really matter to me. I just don't like how little detail they resolve.

good luck, hope you don't regret your move.

i've seen a few and the 7D images were super soft and the D300s were much better in those reviews. but maybe i'm looking at the wrong ones.. its not a big deal to me anyways, just from what i've seen the 7D doesn't impress... neither does the 5DII AF tho.. haha but anyways..

The D300 has a superior ability to track moving subjects over the 50D. This advantage was wiped out with the 7D and IMO Canon sensors produce superior color to the Nikons including the D700 I own.

Beware of reviews. Most are not objective and favor one brand over the other. I'm not a fanboy of either brand and can tell you that anyone who tells you that the D300s has better IQ than the 7D is full of manure. I've shot both and the 7D wins hands down, it's not even a contest IMO.

I hesitate to post a sample because I know I'm far from the best photographer out there, but here's a 100% crop with no sharpening or other post processing applied:

I enjoyed your photos. I lived on Okinawa 1965-1968, when I was in high school (my Dad was stationed there).

I don't agree with you, they're not neccessarily BETTER but its just a matter of opinion. But their colors are more saturated than Canon's (Canon's colors are to be used with PPs while Nikon's are just straight out of the camera most of the time... but either way could be good or bad depending on situations).
P.S. D300s has superior ability to track b/c it has so much AF points and 2 function buttons... I love it. But 7D I also like =)

I'm talking beyond the saturation difference. Color transistion etc. Accurate color rendition is extremely important in my business and I just don't get that straight out of the camera from the Nikons, at least to my satisfaction.

Thank you (I'm still a beginner, but getting better). Okinawa was a great place. Now I live on mainland Japan and love the many photo opportunities I have. You would be surprised how much Okinawa has changed.

Take Care and May God Bless (Happy Thanksgiving)!
