Here we have a couple of ducks from my local park. I cropped them down.

CC is welcome, I know they are a tad out of focus and not too sharp. but what about composition

What you really want with bird photography is (a) detail as to the bird itself; (b) the bird placed nicely in its environment; or (c) both! Here, you're a bit too far away to get the detail you want, and the environment itself isn't particularly appealing. Keep shooting, though -- you'll get what you want!!

Josh put it all in a nutshell there, unfortunately, save,save,save for the best glass you can get must have a "L" in there as well. I have a XT with the same glass, probably the same kit and was never happy with that lens, however with a god lens it will take a very nice shot! :)
