That means it's time for a really basic bit of computer maintenance.

Clean it.

Yip, get out a bucket of water and a sponge and get cleaning. :p

Not really, but it is time to get some canned air, take the covers off the side and clean out the dust filters and fans.
If you computer doesn't have dust filters, then now would be a good time to find some and fit them.

This is a very easy job to do, and if your not confident about removing the covers then any half decent computer store will be able to do it for a very small cost.

The benifits can be huge.
My system just started badly mis-behaving, it actually locked up a couple of programs and then refused to restart.
A quick check of the temps using speedfan showed CPU temps were idling around 60deg C. This is way to high!

So I removed the side cover and used canned air cleaned on all the intakes and fans, dislodging a lot of dust in the process that was blocking everything up, preventing in air flow through the case.
Idle is now around 38 deg C, much more acceptable, and the computers performance has returned to its normally speed.

If your on the wrong side of the world, and descending into winter, there is no reason you can't to this as well.

And don't think you have a perfectly clean house and there won't be any dust.
If your system is more than 12 months old, it will be dusty. Even if like mine, it sits on a clean desk.

60C idle is not right... even my laptop idles under 50 (usually about 45, in summer maybe 50)
in fact... i think it's time to de-dust my laptop again... and desktop too

EDIT: but it's winter here and my cpu is idling about 35... maybe i'll keep it that way for now, makes a great lap warmer

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

The warning is set for 65 and shut down is set for 70.
The front intake, lower intake and side intake (which faces a wall) were all clogged up completely with dust.
The filters did a good job though, and there was only a very small amount inside the case.
There was simply no air flow through the case, hence the extremely high temps.
I imagine the GPU and HDD's were also getting pretty hot as well.
