Hi Folks,

I am looking forward for a general protective filter for my various 77 mm lenses, in the past I have mainly used hoya 77mm UV filters as protection against dust. Is the canon 77mm protective filter better than Hoya one?

No. Hoya HD or Hoya SHMC Pro 1 are some of the best there are.

Canon are amongst the worse made. Never understood that. They make fair cameras and lenses, but crappy bags, pods, filters, etc...

You get what you pay for. B+W and Hoya HD or SHMC Pro 1 are worth the price difference.

I believe Kenko and Hoya are the same companies.

I have one of their bags. It gets light use from me, but I love it.

The 77mm Canon CPL filter is made in Japan, where as the Tiffen is made in USA, so no Canon filters are not made by Tiffen. There are some Canon UV filters made in the Philippines, USA and Japan. All the CPL filters I've seen are made in Japan.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

If the filter is just to protect the lens when not actually shooting, any will be fine.
I like the Canon CPL and with all of these, there is caution in screwing them on to tightly and/or leaving them on for long lengths of time. There are threads here which contain the debate on filters versus no filters and I don't want to ignight that debate. For protection an abundance of caution and use of hood is good protection unless there are harsh conditions. Cheers,
John

The Canon filters are better than some of the Tiffen UV filters.

If I view into some of my Tiffen UV filters with very high magnification, I can see microscopic bubbles inside the filter element which I would expect to cause loss of contrast. I don't see bubbles in Canon filters. Most of the Canon filters also have thinner rings than the Tiffens.

However the Hoya is a much better filter than the Canon. The regular Canon UV filters don't seem to be coated which makes them easy to wash but more prone to ghosts and flare. The Hoya HMC filters are very well coated.
