So here's my story of woe... Wife and I went to Vegas this week specifically to take pictures and goof around. Half way through the first evening my Canon 40D died with ERR 99. Nothing I could do would get it to take another image. Back to the room bummed to do research on the situation only to find out that there's not much I can do other than send it back to Canon for repairs.

Determined not to let this bother me I decided to purchase another body. I have been reading a lot on the new 7D but really had my mind set on purchasing the 5D Mark II. Couldn't find a 7D anywhere but found a 5D body at the local Best Buy and headed that direction. When I got there I found they had the 7D too so walked out with that instead of the 5D.

My question to you guys is did I make the right decision? My tipping point on the 7D was the Frames Per Second capture speed as I do a lot of car racing photography but am I missing out on going to the 5D? I've still got the ability to return the 7D in exchange for the 5D and the 40D is going to Canon for repairs today. I'm what I would consider a novice photographer, been doing it more seriously for about a year or two now but still have a lot to learn. I shoot just about anything that interests me at the time, a lot of car and motorcycle shots mostly stills but about 20% racing. I also do a lot of urban wandering shooting around town.

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Jason

How can it be a story of "woe" when you had the means to buy a camera? At a time when countless numbers of people are begging for work and losing their homes because they can't find a job, (external link) you should be thankful that you have the means to spend US $1,700 on a camera.

Beyond that, there's nothing to show that any Canon DSLR is not capable of generating first-rate images. You claim that you're a "novice photographer;" rather than worrying about something you were fortunate enough to afford, you should start using that equipment to prove it wasn't a waste.

Wow, um, OK, Random... I try to leave my soap boxes put away and seem to have hit a hot spot with you.

Have a great day,
Jason

You are going to love the 7D for the type of quick action shooting you are doing. The 5D does make some impressive images, but it does it much slower than the 7. Hold on to it. You will not be disappointed!

Thanks, Sikor7, I've finally had a chance to read some of the other feed back this morning after posting and it seems I have made the right decision. It's a great camera, I've enjoyed it so far, still getting a feel for the new layout but so far so good.

Good decision Jason.

I should be in your shoes (boots).

I have the 40d and 5d2.

I still want the 7d for the frame speed.

It really depends on what you will be shooting, but given that you mentioned you wanted the higher fps speed and that you like shooting cars and motorcycles, I think you made the correction decision.

I'm a bit taken aback by the other poster who brought up the economy. What does that have anything to do with all this? Am I supposed to feel guilty about the fact that I am thinking about buying the MKIV?

Yea, DC Fan's comments were a bit of of left field I figured I'd throw some good thoughts and wishes his way versus getting into an internet fight about the current economic situation.

Absolutely no need for that reply........

I think the 7D is the right choice especially for motorsport the crop sensor will give that extra reach you would have wished for if you had got the 5D mk2.. Congratulations on your purchase....:)

That isn't a story of woe. That is a story of being fortunate enough to be able to replace a faulty camera immediately by buying an expensive high-end replacement. A tale of woe might involve, for instance, dropping that new expensive camera from a height and wishing that you had taken out an accidental-damage policy. Or being ruined by the economy, as DC Fan forthrightly suggested. I haven't experienced that, but plenty have. Anyway; count your blessings and enjoy your new camera.

Does it count that I left the battery charger for my "expensive high-end replacement" at the hotel we stayed at and the hotel claims they can't find it? Trying to find a replacement charger locally is worse than finding the camera... Does that make it a better story of woe?

As they say, what happens in vegas, stays in vegas. Apparently your battery charger feels the same way.

I for one dont see why Jskwarek should have to feel bad just because he can buy another camera his 40d broke so it is a tale of woe
the fact he can buy another camera is good house keeping in my book, the 7d is a super camera enjoy it .

I think you will be mighty happy with the 7D. I'd love to get my hands on one, even more than a 5DII for some reason. I just love the layout of the controls, the focus speed and system, the new metering the images that are coming from it are very nice. I am however falling in love with my 50D. I bought it months ago, frustrated as heck with it for a while, but now I am loving it. I am working better with LR and my images are coming out more and more how I want them.

You will be HAPPY with the 7D. It sounds like a great fit for you shooting!

Happy Turkey Day as well, lots to give thanks for today, including your wife (hint hint) ;)
