As I recall from reading various threads, the III had all sorts of problems and there were focusing issues, mirror issues and so on, which frustrated professional photographers no end. Not much fun for serious enthusiasts either.

When the IV comes out, will you wait and see if there are issues or buy it as quickly as possible? I'd be tempted to buy it quick but I don't earn my living with a camera so repair issues won't be so critical, just annoying.

Opinions?

Thanks.

More than happy with my 1DSIII, no need to upgrade or change.

You want first the price to be stabilized a bit. The first couple of months you would see shortage of supply. What's funny is that Canon hasn't released the markIIIn. Instead, they have been releasing the fixed version of it with a higher serial number. This indicates that the current markIII batches are good. MarkIV??? Don't know. It took Canon 3 or 4 years to come out with a MarkIII after MarkIIn was released. It may be a while before the markIV comes out.

All things considered I'd likely pass on it for quite some time. I really don't think I need bigger files for what I shoot, nor do I need higher ISO unless it's very clean. Add to that the fact that in 3 to 6 months after they hit store shevles they depreciate worse than a new car.

I didn't realize that the 1Ds MkIII had issues. The 1D MkIII definitely had issues. Is it possible you are referring to the 1D MkIII or did the 1Ds MkIII also have issues of its own?

The only thing I really want out that the 1d3 doesn't have is a better LCD, but i really don't care, that's just me searching for reasons, if anything i'll pick up another 1d3.

I want more so that I don't need my 500L to shoot birds. I could use my 50mm and to crop the shots as if I had a 500L. :)

Some 1dmkiiis had an issue, the vast majority didn't

How does this relate to the 1Ds MkIII? That's the point I'm trying to clarify. Everyone (except maybe the OP) knows the 1D MkIII had issues.

He is believing the internet, which means every 1DIII has huge issues, and anything that ever touched a 1DIII later developed issues because they were contagious.

The OP seems to be confused about the difference between the 1DsMkIII and the 1DMkIII. It was the 1DMkIII that caused all the panic because some had a problem with focusing in some circumstances. This led to a large number of threads with titles like "My MkIII problems" and "Just got my MkIII and it has the problem" etc. The posters of THOSE threads also didn't seem aware that there was also a MkIII of the 1Ds series. As a result, there are folks who think all MkIII cameras have problems. Canon would be wise not to call the next 5D the 5DMkIII - everyone will avoid it :)

Avoid it! Why? The firmware upgrade was simple and solved the problem at the time. It's an extremely successful model considering that the industry knocked its predecessor 5D, and consumers called for a range of improvements that in the end, Canon didn't supply.

or am I misinterpreting your comment? Is it to be avoided simply because the next name in sequence is MKIII and that revives the memory of the 1DMKIII experience. (which I assure you is real and has caused many sleepless nights).

Yup, that was what the :) was for. I know the 1DMkIII caused grief but many posted "MkIII problems" in thread titles without specifying that it was the 1DMkIII not the 1DsMkIII. So yes, the moniker MkIII is tarnished, that was my comment.

It took Canon 3 or 4 years to come out with a MarkIII after MarkIIn was released. It may be a while before the markIV comes out.

try a year and a half:

1D September 01
1Dii January 04
1Dii'N' August 05
1Diii February 07

but it's about a 3 year cycle for each full revision. I'm also surprised the AF fiasco didn't result in a 1Diii'N' with an improved screen, but we should see the 1Div in January/February 2010.
