I just got a "new to me" 350d. I've noticed that sometimes while depressing the trigger to focus, the built in flash stobes. Is this normal? Does not seem normal to me, but it's my first DSLR (I've had several EOS 35mm models) and it strikes me as odd. Does not do it every time, just enough for me to raise an eyebrow.

I've been reading the forum, and have not found anything yet referencing this.

Thanks.

Have you tried reading your manual?

It is normal in low light conditions.

If you are using the pop-up flash it may fire a pre-flash to let the lens focus in low light.

Just had to modify the search.

Thanks for the responses. I did read the manual (Pages 96-102) and honestly did not associate the strobe as a pre-flash. A preflash (to me) is one, maybe two flashes. This thing stobes and is something that I am not used to.

Ok...so I have gotten the "rookie question" out of the way.

If and when you buy a speedlite (430ex or whatever) you will not have this problem because they have the AF assist beam which works so nice. :)

I'm eyeballing one now.
