I tried to do a shot like this when my family was hiking. Saw some shots like this, so figured, whta the heck. could not get settings right away and my 2 year old daughter did not want to wait...... sooo... how would you set this up without blowing out picutres. I think i had iso way to high and could not change it quick enough. my guess for next time. iso 100? high fstop(f11+) and 580 exIII at +1 or +2 of flash compensatoin?? am i on the right path?

to setup with out blowing out photo is shutter speeds and F9-F11ish.. ISO 100..

and you will need lots of power if you are doing a family shoot for lighting up a whole family.. a single 580EXII will not be enough for the sun flare shots.. for a the whole family.

but later on the sunsets.. a 580EXII with a larger modifier will do a good job on the late sunsets..

hope i helped..

Were you using any diffusers or what ? Really liking the lighting here plus on your other shots. I currently use a brolly but it may be spreading the light too much.

the PLM i use comes with the white diffuser..

it looks like this..

the one i use is on the right side.. just looks like a huge reflect umbrella with a white diffuser on it..
