I decided to go up to the Sammish Flats (about 60 miles north of Seattle) in search of wintering raptors and wasn't disappointed. There were numerous red-tailed hawks in the trees along the freeway on the way up there. Once there my first encounter was a nice peregrine falcon which was (unfortunately) sitting on the crossbar of a telephone pole watching a large flock of dunlins near by. Down the road a bit was a rough-legged hawk on a telephone wire scanning the ditch below. There were several red-tails also hunting, a few eagles and several harriers in the area. I witnessed a harrier actually catching a dunlin in mid air - kind of a surprise. I was interested in getting flight and action shots. All were handheld with the 1D3 and 500mm.

Super flight shots Bob, nice detail and very sharp. I used to live in Bellingham, and know the area you shot in. Well done!

Thanks for all of your comments. I used the 1D3 and 500mm on all of these shots (1.4X added on the peregrine). I went back there today but the weather was less than pleasant - cloudy, windy and drizzle. The peregrine was there again in almost the same spot. No decent images today.
