Did a little research a while ago as I vaguely remember as a young child traveling from Fishguard to Rosslare in a boat where you drove into it from a side entry. Only remembered it vaguely as we traveled at night. I recall driving down a tunnel into the quayside then into the boat. Turns out it was the Lancaster’s sister ship, the duke of Rothesay, which had been converted a car ferry in the late sixties. Found some images here, it was exactly as I remember it! http://www.doverferryphotosforums.co.uk …say-iii-past-and-present/ Great images btw ![]() Thanks for the link.......interesting reading! It is an abandoned ship nobody seems to know what to do with and falling into a worse state of decay by the day. Not sure how it got hauled to where it is now but unfortunately the scrap value is probably less than the labour cost of scraping it. She was towed there into a purpose built dock on a very very high tide, (all her main fuel and water tanks had been emptied and she had minimal water ballast on board so that she was riding as high as possible, rumour has it her propellors where removed too) with the intention of making her into a 'Fun Ship' and holding markets etc on her car deck. It never worked out. The cost of scrapping her would be huge as she is full of white and blue asbestos that was used to lag the steam pipes, boilers etc. I know this ship very well as I used to work on her and have very fond memories.
