I'm beginning to think my version of this lens is cursed, that said, if they repair it this time I'm not sure much of the lens I originally purchased in 2005 will still be around. It's turning into a Lincoln's axe tail for me.

My original lens breakage was at the paws of our cat.https://photography-on-the.net …35&highlight=24-70+mrchad

Well today I was attempting take number 2 of the cliched x-mas card photo, and my rig fell off the tripod ball head, I thought the L bracket was attached but sad to say it was not. My lens took the largest hit and is now in 2 pieces. Rig fell on carpet.

So I guess it and the 5DII will head to Canon. I'm going to have the 5DII cleaned and checked just to be safe. Some test shots with other glass appears to confirm it's working just fine.

I'm really not this big a klutz, but I am beginning to think my lens has bad karma. I know a lot of folks in here complain about a soft copy of the lens. Do they bounce any better then the hard copy I have? - sheesh. Me, this lens, and the month November are not getting along.

I've learnt something from this. I did not realise that the lip on the lens at that point was any more than a moulded corner. What is supposed to hold the two parts together?

Interesting to see what goes on under the skin.

The lens mount is screwed into a plastic housing under the rear metal shell. That housing snapped apart where the screws go in. All but one of the ribbon cables pulled out, the final one tore. The focus ring is stiff so that almost worries me more because that means something else is messed up internal on the lens as well. The last time my lens was repaired the focus was jumpy so the invoice said collar parts was replaced, perhaps some other or same collar parts are now dislodged again?

I believe that many of the L zooms are built in a a like fashion - engineered plastic guts. The black outer metal skin appears to protect the internals but offers no real structure to the lens. So the plastic under said skin must normally be some pretty tough stuff. Glass is heavy, I can see the engineers saving weight were ever needed this makes sense.

I mailed insured via UPS today my lens and 5DII (for cleaning) to Canon with (CPS lables) hopefully that expidites the repair and processing for both items. I've never had to use my CPS status for repair - this is sadly going to be my first go around under CPS terms. So unluckily for me I get to cash in my repair voucher discount certificate - which I had hoped to never use.

I think this design is to make happen just what happened to you... drop the lens and body, and the lens will snap at a designed point, instead of damaging the mount/sensor.
I can see where in some cases, we'd want the body to take the damage, as bodies are often cheaper than some of the lenses we attach to them, but I think the idea is that if you drop a pair like that, you may still be able to unhook the broken lens parts, slap on another lens, and keep going (I've seen and heard plenty of that happen).

i wouldn't blame it on karma :D.

were you using the regular screw type arca swiss QR? i almost lost my camear a couple of times and then i switched to the really right stuff flip lever release which to me is alot safer and much simpler to use.

i found that when i was twiddling around with the various knobs with eye to the camera i would sometimes inadvertanty loosen the screw-type QR, which really should be called a "slow release" :D.

Bogen RC2 style quick release system. I swear I thought I heard and felt the lever click and lock into position when I reattached my RC2 L bracket.

My assumption is they won't rejoin these two parts more then likely just replace the entire rear section of the lens if possible. I have no idea what this runs but expect to know sooner then later.

They replaced my entire front lens group (the zoom part) the last time and that ran around $200.00.

Perhaps but it's still broken to me all the same :P
I'm still not sold that this is a designed break point - I think broken is broken.

I'd rather not ever choose broken camera or body, ever - regardless of price.
