I'm going to ask this here, insted of the flash and lighting section, as most of you probably use strobes for sports more then they do there.

I'm in the market for some strobes. Looking at the AB 800's, as I have heard many good things on here about their use for indoor sports. The question I have is this. Would AB400's also be up to the task, or do you feel they would not be powerful enough? Also, outside of the AB's is there anything else in that price range ($560 for 2 lights) that you can recommend? I also want to use these lights for portrait work when needed, so I will also be buying a softbox, umbrella, and stands.

As always, thanks for your help!

For the minor difference in price get the 800's over the 400's. Especially if you are using them for sports. The extra power will be appreciated when you are trying to light up a gym.

If you get the AB800s, buy the 11" reflectors, too. It will help throw the light over a longer distance.

I agree with both of the previous comments. Get the 800s and the 11" long throw reflectors.

Thanks

Romeo,
I ordered 2 of them yesterday. My first game is on December 18. We'll find out soon.

Thanks Phil, I was trying to find some insight before I go up into the rafters, I have a game tonight so I will find out if they make a difference, its a non conference game so I can use this time to tweak them. I report back with some results.

AB gives you a discount when you buy enough with the lights - personally went with four 1600's as you can always turn them down but can't turn the 400's up!
