My aunt and uncle have some farm land in indiana. They are in an area of southern indiana that is known as the bottoms or more properly the wetlands.

Several years ago, they signed a deal with the DNR not to farm a portion of their land, so that some wetlands could be reestablished.

I love snakes. i love to go out find snakes and photograph snakes.

So one day while looking for snakes, I came across the junk pile that lies on the edge of the farm land and woods/wetlands. And out of the corner of my eye I saw a snake.

I couldn't believe it! It was a federally endangered copperbelly watersnake! Gold mine!

I go there quite a few times in the spring and summer and have found 7 different species of snakes just on their property and I am pretty sure there are at least one or two more.

Here is a pic of the copperbelly as found in the trash pile:

habitat shot (at the tree line is where the "bottoms" begin):

what a find, it's good you appreciate it too. So many people seem to think the only good snake is a dead snake. Hey that's an interesting looking glass jar too, it looks old.

Nice capture! I can't wait for snake season 2010. My goal is to find several Copperheads, and Timber's!

copperbelly is a type of watersnake. most of their habitat has been developed. there are a few strong populations left where they occur in the U.S., and where i find mine is one of them.

hoosier, snake season starts in jan. if you want it too.

i have a couple of really strong leads on timber populations and dens outside of brown co, yellow wood and morgan monroe.

i sure hope you have a great snake season in the upcoming year.
