Ive been getting this for awhile now but the problem for me is that I dont understand why its doing this
I take a shot (day or night) and I end up with 2 pictures one black and one with the photo clear on it... Ive no idea why this is

The black one is called a "raw" photo and the other a "jpeg" both are the same size (for example 2.6mb) theyre also the same number in the sequence which is why I think theyre meant to be together, it does this without regard to the settings! Ive tried changing the iso the appature and the settings on top (P, AV, TV etc) but to no avail it still does it.

for processing the photos I have a mac pro with iphoto, the canon digital professional program that came with the camera along with the mac aperture program bought separately. I have a feeling they are one and the same photo but for some reason they havent combined (if thats whats meant to happen?) its starting to bother me a fair bit why this is happening and what I can do about it?

As I say Im fairly sure they must go together merge or something like that? I wonder if this would improve the photo clarity or depth of the subject (ie perhaps bring out a clearer sunset instead of the "blob" of gold that I presently seem to get

How do I get the photos online so I can perhaps show you whats happening?

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?
Cheers
Shane

This might be in the wrong area of the forum and if so I apologize, can someone move it to the appropriate place for it and if you do can you please email me and advise me where youve put it? Thanks

Are you sure they're the same size?

Tehre is a setting on Canon DSLRs that let you take two files RAW and/or JPEG. The RAW is the raw data, the jpeg is an image file. Since the raw file contains a lot of data, it is typically a lot larger in file size (maybe 5 times larger).

You can take either 'formats', or you can take both at once. Sounds like ow have it set to capturing both with every shot. Check your 'Quality' setting and make sure it is not on "Raw+JPEG".

I'm not sure about that model, but on my Canon, the direct-print button (also has RAW+Jpeg written on it) functions as a one shot "RAW+JPEG", so my next shot will capture both files. Does your camera have that feature and you're accidentally hitting that button before a shot? Might explain if it is only happening intermittently.

aLso, they're not meant to be 'merged'. The are separate ways of recording the image you captured.

They're not meant to be together. RAW and JPEG are two different formats and there is an option on your camera to take both at the same time, called "RAW + JPEG", since both have different uses. It's strange that you mention they're the same size though.. the RAW file is supposed to be larger.

Go to the menu and the "Quality" setting and change RAW + JPEG to just JPEG. This "problem" should then go away.

Thanks for the quick reply

Ive no idea where Id find that setting mate will get it out and try to find it in the menu thing.

Yes theyre either slightly larger or the same size

Okay looking at it... under the menu quality setting... it comes up with "RAW+L" (theres a quater moon looking thing before the L) followed along the top with 10M 3888x2592 {999}
then under that three rows... to the left of the screen is the setting wheel (same as what you turn for your settings on the top of camera with only the uppermost settings highlighted) then a list of L L M M S S (with quater moon and stepped quater moon icons) and finally on the right most side is RAW+L (quater moon) and under that RAW... thats it doesnt seem to be just a Jpeg setting in this area... only one I can find that shows the RAW thing so Im assuming this is the spot I need to be?? Could be wrong I suppose but Ive no idea

Please note what I'm about to say is in the manual. There isn't a 'single' JPEG setting, because you can choose what size (pixels) to shoot your JPEG in. L = large, M = medium, S = small. Then you can choose what quality to shoot that JPEG in. Generally, you want L with the highest quality setting (the quarter moon with a smooth arc, not zigzaggy).

Again, just to reiterate, all of this is in your manual. Good luck Shane.

Okay thanks Colin

Mate I actually just said what you did... only there is NO jpeg only setting that I can find in the quality settings!

It is set at the smooth quater moon setting but with the raw setting added to it... its either that or just the raw setting!! I cannot find a jpeg only setting if someone would tell me where its meant to be I will check and get back to you... but I cant find it.

The camera is less than 2 months old 1000D model

Cheers

WHAT BLOODY MANUAL??? I did NOT get a manual of any sort with the camera!! Just a small booklet that was a quick quide thing!! Straight out of the box NO manual... perhaps if I had access to one I wouldnt need to ask here right? Sorry but I guess that comment gets to me after a bit... I know some others do ask before looking but I dont if I had the damned book Id read it and not need this forum

ahem okay just re read your comments Colin and I apologize for the slight rant above... so I cannot get just a jpeg setting on this camera? meaning I guess that I have no choice but to have two photos? since there is only the "raw and L" setting and a "raw" only setting? mmmm okay so I guess Im stuck with this situation... damn oh well cant afford to replace the thing so will keep on swearing at it until I can then I will check if it DOES have just a jpeg setting cause believe me this is getting damned annoying! Oh well Christmas just a couple of weeks away guess someone would like a near new digital slr for a Christmas present... I dont need the agravation this is causing

Page 64 in your manual. I assume you just want high quality JPGs, that will be the top left menu box.

Are you sure? These should be the settings available:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
Byte size: ZERO | Content warning: NOT AN IMAGE

You want the first setting on that list.

Regarding the manual, your camera should have come with one. Not the quick start guide, but a full manual. Did you buy your camera second-hand or something? If not, you should contact your place of purchase as it appears you didn't get all the accessories which should have come with the camera.

Page 64. Seems to be a whole column of jpeg only settings. Only two RAW settings to the right.

I'm too slow. I'll go have coffee instead.

Welcome to POTN Shane. You live in a place I liked so much I have been there twice ;) Hope to get back there again some day.

As others have said, the camera should have come with a manual - have a chat to the seller. I tend to get an online PDF ( like the one you were linked to by Joseph) and keep that on my computer as a reference and leave the printed one in the box the camera came in so, if I ever sell a camera, the manual is in new condition and is available.

Best of luck to you

Thanks Colin... yeah I actually enjoy it even though the learning curve is huge and daunting the photos Im getting are stunning to say the least  Now Im thinking macro and telephoto lens plus as many different filters I can find!!.. I got a remote switch for it but it wasnt wireless unfortunately but its stopped the minor shake I was getting without it so thats that issue out the way ;)

And you blokes have resolved this issue so alls good about now!!

Yeah John Broome is absolutely brilliant!! Moved here in September and wont be returning to suburbia new life new lifestyle and so much warmth ALL YEAR!! Mangos just coming in along with Pawpaw so fruit is plentiful and delish... the ocean less than 200 metres from my door for sunrises and less than 5klms for sunsets cant get much better I reckon!! Photo ops all over the countryside ala why I bought the camera!! Come back anytime an say gidday

I will go back to the mob I bought it of and see if I can get a manual from them, but that link will do the trick even better since my eyesights not what it once was I kinda like a big version anyway... but as you say if I ever decide to move it on to one of the many kids I have then the manual will help them

Cheers and thanks again... have a good one! ;)
Shane
