I just realized that I've been telling you guys about the wrong camera the whole time. It's not the 30D that I was looking at... It was the D30.. :/ It was Canon's first DSLR camera that they made in April 2000.

Ya. heh. You don't want a D30.

That bad eh? :/

Crap.

Well I suppose I should pull some extra hours here and there and save my pennies for a Rebel XT. Maybe ask Santa for a body or lenses for christmas. :P

I would chime in and say a used 20D or 30D would be a perfect starter camera.

Throw in a 18-55 IS and a 50mm f1.8 and you have a very nice starters kit for $500-600.

Definately get your letters and numbers in order - 30D=YES, D30=NO.

I guess I am the only one that noticed he had the D on the wrong end when I read 60D and realized Canon doesn't make one yet.

If you want to go cheap, don't go below a 10D. It will have much shorter battery life and will take a while to wake up when put to sleep, but if you don't shoot in situations requiring fast wake up, I think my old 10D produced beautiful images. I upgraded my 30D this year and decided to keep it as the backup and give the 10D to my son. He is a graphic designer and used to help me do rapid turn around pictures at a race track for several years. He always preferred the image quality from the 10D to the 30D, so he is delighted.

I would not buy a 10D, either. You probably won't find a terrific deal on one, and it has some lens fit issues. I don't remember offhand, what they are. Buy at least a 20D if you buy something in the XXD series.

Thank you guys for all your help on this matter - and I apologize for getting my D's mixed up. :P

I've been shopping around for a little and I think I'm going to go with the Rebel XS, I found one used for $400 on craigslist. Going to be seeing the guy later tomorrow.

I think I would select a 30D instead of a 1000D.
The 30D is older, but it is from a way more high-end series, and the age has allowed the price to drop nicely. Depending on money, I would consider the 40D for live view, and automatic sensor dust removal.

The 1000D is really inteded for people who don't really know if they want to use a DSLR or not. The 30D was designed for people sleeping with the camera under their pillow, just to be prepared.

Well, I'll see how much I can haggle this guy down to before I keep going back and forth on which camera to get.

But the thing is, I was considering getting a D30, not the 30D. And the general consensus of this forum is avoid the D30 like the black plague. :P

Yes, but the 1000D is basically intended for people who aren't too interested in cameras. The xxD (with the D after the number) are designed for people who likes to take pictures and sees their camera as an important tool.

Just for reference:

30D, around $400:

20D, around $250:

30D, around £250:

I think you will be happier with an older semi-pro camera than a very new entry-level camera.

Yes, you should definatly be able to get a 30D (or 20D if you don't mind the smaller LCD) for the same or cheaper cost to the XS/1000D. IMO and I'm sure many others would agree even the older Rebel XTi is a better camera then the XS, it doesn't have so many important features stripped down such as AF points and FPS in RAW.
