Both shots can be seen in higher res on my Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ken2000ac/ (external link)

Little background: in September of 2006 I had not had a DSLR for long, and I was just getting comfortable in my new hobby. I was single at the time, but hanging out with a friend who was to be married within a week [We are both in Seminary, hence the original texts]. We decided to try one of those cliche ring shots we'd seen so many times before, using a biblical passage that he was going to use in his wedding: 1 Corinthians 13. This is the result:

Over three years later, I thought I would do the same treatment with my own ring. Just messing around, nothing serious. According to Flickr, however, it is my most popular shot on my photostream, and I have only had it up for a week now. This shot is using Jeremiah 31.

So yes, it is very cliche, but it was a fun way to pass the time. Additionally, now I have something which holds a special meaning to me expressed as an image.

I'm loving the Greek and Hebrew texts. I had Greek at Bible College. Nasty stuff.

As cliche as this concept is, I'd never seen it until about a year ago, and it's still new enough to me that I still like it.

Nice shots on your part, too.

Thanks guys. I've gotten an overwhelming response from it, so I guess being "cliche" isn't necessarily a deal-killer.

Nicely done !!!! ...I had tried something similar a while back using a lens filter...but was not very satisfied so never posted it anywhere. I saw your post today, and it reminded me of my attempt, so I hunted out that image .....

Technique is super simple.

1) Find a book. Religious texts work really well. ;)
2) Find a ring.
3a) Stand the ring up and fire a flash or shine a light from the back to cast a shadow.
3b) Lay the ring down so that it is flat and fire a flash or shine a light from above to cast the shadow.
4) Both will form a shadow that is heart shaped when in spine of the book.

Here's one of mine.

Had an old Hasselblad filter I used for B+W film years ago. Thought I might put it to use trying some fun shots. Had to laugh when I saw the same idea posted here. This certainly didn't make the cut for an album page.

I'm sorry I didn't realize this thread had updated - jacuff explained it perfectly though. It's really simple whether using an off-camera flash or a simple desk lamp.

Be sure to post your results! :)
