I have 30D, which lens combo to bring? I am trying to go light for travel and minimize lens switching.

I would like to take some wide angle portraits

And Do I need to bring a Polarizer?

1. 10-22 + 50mf1.8
2. 10-22
3. 17-85
4. 16-35L f2.8

Thanks.

If you are happy with the IQ from your 17-85mm, that focal range would be great. The 85mm side will allow you to get portraits unobtrusively and the 27.2 wide side is plenty wide enough for most shots. If you need wider, simply shoot two or more shots and merge that into a pano. It's easy to do hand held.

As far as a CPL, I never leave home without one!

polarizers aren't that cumbersome so you should bring it, imo.

I'd bring the 10-22 and the nifty.

For Japan and HongKong, wide angle lens will definitely get a lot more usage. These places are very crowded and require a lot of walking. And I would suggest bring one lens (attacked to body) only. My picked would be:
1. 17-85 only, decent picture, small, light, versatile
2. 16-35L only, very good IQ at the expanse of size, wieght and versatility

I would never go anywhere without my polarizer. It is just too useful to leave behind.

Thanks Joosay. I am leaning 10-22 and 50mm right now. Howerver, 10-22 (which i just got for less than 2 weeks) is not a easy lens too use with portraits. Nonetheless, 10-22 has 'L' like IQ for sure.

When I went to HK earlier this year, I b(r)ought only a Tamron 18-270 with me.
Around 80% of my shots were taken at 18mm - so personally, I would bring a wide-zoom. In your shoes I'd take the 17-85 with me. But do bring a tripod. It's essential IMO.

Changing lenses is the LAST thing you want to do when you're traveling.

It is a challenging lens and you should try to practice a lot before you take it. If you don't feel comfortable with it I'd bring the 16-35L.

You should take the bullet train to Tokyo from Osaka if you have time :)

Thanks reprazent. I find that too as I use wide angle alot when travelling. I was at LV, 17-85 was not wide enough and I was shooting at 17mm most of the time. Same for FL disneyland.

Now comes 10-22 and I am concern bring that single lens will be too limited and might not be ideal for travel portraits.
