Two questions....
1. Is this a good camera to get for a DSLR starter, but has been with 35mm film for a few years now?

2.On the screen in the back, can I make it so I can look at the screen if I wanted to while taking the picture rather than looking through the eye hole?

Thanks
-Geese

Yes, the XS is a good starter and it does have live view so you can use the lcd instead of the viewfinder.

1. XS is a very decent camera for starter. If you like to shoot RAW and tweek image yourself, you probably want to spent a little more for XSi. XS supports RAW format, but at very slow frame rate. If you don't plan to use RAW often, it is very good camera.

2. what you are refering is called "Live View". And YES XS does support Live View feature.

However, the price on that website is BAD. You can easily get XS+18-55IS kit for less than $500 or even under $450. It was $399 on thanksgiving weekend. I also suggest skip that 75-300III lens.

At the price they're selling at now they are a fantastic buy and make a great starter DSLR. I got one to reduce the frequency of changing lenses on my 7D and am very happy with the images I get out of it.

I suggest you purchase the below Canon XS + Kit lens from Amazon below:

http://www.amazon.com …-55mm-Black/dp/B001CBKJGG (external link)

Also purchase the Canon 50mm f1.8 II prime:

http://www.amazon.com …oto&qid=1259719495&sr=1-1 (external link)

This will cost you $580.00

The 75-300mm included in the deal you linked is not a very highly rated lens. You can buy it for $195.00 new.

I suggest spend an extra $60.00 bucks and get the Canon 55-250mm IS which is considered a nice lens and better then the 75-300mm.

Regards & Good Luck whatever your decision. :D

Ok. So would the 50mm lens be good for macro pictures?
