Hello everyone. I just ordered a new tripod and I am wondering if I made a good decision. This is the tripod I ordered

I would very much appreciate any thoughts on the subject.

I would have bought the ballhead (488RC2).

With the equipment that you have it should be fine. A remote shutter release will make it even better. For the price I'd say you did well. Tripods & heads are all budget dependent to an extent. I used $20-$30 tripods for years with my old film bodies with great results. Now if your going to use heavier long lenses you will have to upgrade to something rated to support the weight of the gear your going to use with it.

Enjoy Hall

Three handle pan-tilt heads can be a bit fussy to use because there is one handle for each movement direction. A ball head usually has one knob for all movements except panning.

You should be fine; I agree that you may want to switch to something like the 488RC2 mentioned above, at some point though.

The one problem I have with the 055 is that it is pretty large, even when collapsed; this makes it more awkward to take with on general walkabouts. It is also somewhat heavy.

Overall, though, I really enjoy it. And the ability to put the center column horizontal and adjust the the legs out, you can use it for nice macro and low angle shots without killing your back :)

The 055 is a descendant of the 2021 (sold in USA as Bogen 2021), which a decade ago was a highly respected tripod for those who were not heavy hikers who demanded a more compact and light weight unit (the 190, decendent of the the Bogen 3001). If you want a tripod for 'at home' rather than 'air travel', the size and weight are less an issue for you. One solution previously used, to deal with the length of the collapsed 3021 (or the newer 055) is simply to remove the head from the leg set, to pack inside your luggage. Three-way heads are better for video work, ballheads are typically found to be better for still cameras.
