Well, I was in the camera shop yesterday just looking around, when I spied they had a new Sigma 70-300mm OS in stock. After playing around with it for 10 minutes on a 7D, I've got to say I was pretty impressed:

  • Good solid feel
  • Smooth Zoom ring and zero creep
  • No play in the barrel
  • Very quiet and effective OS
  • Close focussing
The one thing I can't comment on in detail is the picture quality, because I could only inspect on the rear screen (having said that, it certainly appeared to be sharp from what I could tell).

So... has anyone brought one yet? What more do Sigma have to do? I just really want to hear some hands on reviews from owners. Price (£285 at Bristol Cameras) seems pretty good compared to the Canon 70-300mm IS (£389) when you consider the Siggy has a bona fide 4 stop IS, SLD element, 150cm MFD and no rattling lens barrel. I think I'd certainly be in the market for one if I hadn't just blown my budget on a new 15-85mm :). It just seems to be a newer, better alternative to the aged Canon (although I'm happy to be shot down in flames on that, since I've only used one occasionally).

Thoughts, comments?

Just bumping this up as I am also interested in response to this lens' performance. If anyone has the experience to compare this to the 55-250 IS I'd like to hear that. I don't use long reach often and I think I want to get in with an IS/OS/VR tele zoom under $400 before I start looking at the 70-200s and whatnot.

I've had one for about two weeks (using it on a 5DII) - really nice lens for $399. I know people will flame me for this, but it rivals my 70-200 F4 L IS at times. I also had a Canon 70-300 IS when it first came out and IMO the new Sigma is better. I'll try to post some pics later.

Edit: focuses like a champ too. It is a bit soft at 300mm @ 5.6 (along with some CA) but very nice at f6.3-7.1. I'd say about 2 1/2 stops on the OS (rather than claimed 4 stops). However the OS is silent which is good for video (IS on my 70-200 F4 L IS sounds like a coffee grinder compared to the Sigma).

Those two portraits look pretty sharp! Thanks for the examples.
