What was priceless was that after he told them he was up to nothing, they just said "OK" and drove off!

What else were they supposed to do? Follow him around? (which is apparently legal in the US? [Unwarranted surveillance that is])

Actually, if you were in the right place at the right time wearing that shirt would be probable cause for arrest and search. The fact they didn't arrest him makes me think they had watched him for awhile or that he was standing on a corner that was not associated with any kind of drug activity. They had to have some reason for not wanting to bother with him, but still fealt obligated to drive over and talk to him about the shirt.

To be honest, I think it harkens back to the original intent of the post and is indicative of the lack of common sense of some in law enforcement.

Real crack dealers don't stand around doing business on street corners with tshirts that label them as crack dealers.

Terrorists scouting and photographing potential targets don't usually do so with tripods and 2-foot long bright white lenses that make them stand out like a sore thumb.

Let's be very careful folks, that we don't get into politics here. The discussion has been reasonably on-topic, but like so many of these threads, it runs the risk of devolving into other than a discussion about photography.

Discussions like this are very difficult to keep on track if for no other reason than they're about laws (good, bad and indifferent) and those laws comes from politicians.

I think it's a natural thing to want to try and understand the intent behind certain rules and restrictions. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to be against a rule, restriction or law without also disagreeing with the politics of those who make them. Don't think I've ever seen a post that read "You know, I love Mayor Johnson but his policies stink..." ;)

And thus begins the dreaded "slippery slope."

It's pretty hard to talk about a legal matter without talking about the laws... which are basically politics in written and enforced forms :P

Even photographers are affected by the endless examples of stupidity of politics and the law. We might want it different, but it's not.

Agreed. There is no actual logic of harassing photographers with gear that flamboyant. But it gives the perception to the general public that they are safer because law enforcement is doing something. Albeit to the expense of the completely innocent.
