Taken at Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park. These aren't great, shooting underwater life is tough. I might have done better if I had my CPL with me, but I didn't.

These "sea cows" can weigh 3000lbs or more, need warm water for survival, and are strictly vegetarian. Hard to believe the manatee is thought to be the source of the myth about mermaids. Thanks for looking. Stan (See my gallery at http://www.pbase.com/sparker1

Dec 02, 2009 17:04 | #4 I love the second shot. Is this place a refuge for the Manatees, or are they wild? I've heard that boats are a real danger to them. Mom to the furmonsters:p

They currently have three others being re-habilitated with plans for release at some point. Others can come into the springs and leave at will. In the river just outside the park (where the springs feed it), people like to swim with the manatees. Stan (See my gallery at http://www.pbase.com/sparker1

EveryMilesAMemory Goldmember More info | We plan on being down in that area on Monday! Have you ever checked out the Three Sisters Spring area? We've paddled back there a few times in our Kayaks and its an amazing sight when these huge creatures will come right up to your boat and start rubbing up against it. Pat Bonish

I'm thinking if anyone mistook these for mermaids, it must have been during Victorian Times and the sailor had been out to sea for quite some time...LOL We'll have to meet up and go out shooting I haven't been to Three Sisters, although I hear it is beautiful. We were in that area only a few days because we had our grand-daughters along and they had to get back. There are many preserves and parks in that area and it would take a while to see them all. Last time I "swam with the manatees" was when a big one came up under our canoe and flipped us. Stan (See my gallery at http://www.pbase.com/sparker1

I'd love to have a chance to see the manatees sometime; but for some reason they don't range up to the Pacific NorthWest much...:p Yeah, I can't understand it, either. Thanks for looking, appreciate your thoughts. Stan (See my gallery at http://www.pbase.com/sparker1
