The landscape photographer's car or truck. What do you drive?

I've been pondering a new car for months really and with this new car I want to be able to go places that my current car (a little corolla) cannot go. Chief among these is being able to go to places like the Racetrack and Eureka Dunes in Death Valley.

So, I would like to know what fellow landscape photographers drive. I've thought about Jeeps, FJ Cruisers, small pickups, etc.

What do you drive? Are there places you want to go but cannot go with your vehicle?

I drive a 1999 Ram 2500 with the Cummins diesel. It's somewhat rough riding, but I get decent mileage, should run forever, have enough room for me, a buddy or two, gear, and all that. I've yet to get stuck in it... the aggressive tires and 4wd help a lot.

Honestly though, your vehicle will depend on your needs... if you're not hauling people or pulling trailers, you probably don't need/want a full size pickup. As far as getting stuck, a Jeep Wrangler with some aggressive tires on it will take you 99% of the places you'd ever want to go... the 4.0 motor coupled with a 5 speed in them gets decent mileage, and is bulletproof reliable.

I was thinking about a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. I really want to be able to put a roof rack on there to haul kayaks around. The Jeep seems designed to have the top taken apart which I really don't care about (and would basically never do). Hrm.

I don't really foresee myself hauling a trailer around, but would like to be able o haul a couple people with me. I definitely want 4wd and off-road tires.

The newer Wranglers really have a great design with the top... they're built much more solid than the older years, and the ability to take small pieces off to have a "sunroof" or something like that is really nice IMO. Makes a great day even better. Aftermarket on the Jeeps is huge for wheels/tires/lifts/brush guards, or whatever you wanted to put on them. The 4 door models look plenty roomy, but I haven't been in one myself. If I didn't pull large trailers, and need the pickup bed for hauling, A Wrangler Unlimited 4 door is what I would be driving :D

the original jeeps will tow a trailer, but you won't like doing it. the short wheelbase makes a very fatiguing drive, even without a trailer, they are squirrely. I drive a big old full size club cab pickup. Plenty of room for 6 adults, full size doors all around, a wheel base that is the equivalent of a short walk and 4 wheel drive. It is honestly the most reliable snow rig I have ever driven and tows like a dream. the drawback is it gets 11 MPG, uphill, downhill, loaded, unloaded, 11 MPG period. that sucks compared to a smaller SUV or a cute ute.

I used to drive an Explorer -- now I drive a Prius. I may not be able to travel to places that require high clearance, but for every 250 miles that I used to travel in the Explorer I can now travel 1,000 miles for the same cost.

Toyota Tacoma. Fits my lifestyle at this time in my life. :)

And I only allow it to take me part of the way where I want to go. Allowing my truck to take me there removes some of the fun of getting there and tears up too much of the landscape.

I have both a Chevy Silverado and a Scion XB (the box) - depending on where I am going or what I am doing. (believe it or not, the little box has way more room inside than the full cab of my Silverado, and it gets 30+ mpg)

I drive a golf VR6 which pretty much means I can't go anywhere that's not a road but the walking is part of the experience to me ;)

VW Touareg TDi with air suspension. That thing goes just about anywhere, is very fuel efficient and tows our 6000lbs trailer with ease. This is the third Touareg that we've owned - we call this one "the Beast" :-)

For domestic fly-fishing and photgraphy expeditions: a '2003 Subaru Forester. Fantastic vehicle. Totally reliable, durable, ( has over 120k miles without a single hick-up) economical, ( over 30 mpg) all the room a rational person needs ( retired empty nesters, it's usually just my wife & myself ) and it safely and comfortably goes places few other cars can.

Been looking at the new 3.6 liter 6-cylinder Outbacks. Slightly larger and more upscale with more standard features.

I have a Subaru Impreza WRX, while it's no truck, it's AWD with winter tires will certainly let me get places a normal 2WD car could not in the snow.

I pretty much get to where ever I need to get to with this:

IMAGE: http://www.centerphotography.com/jeep09.jpg

The soft top doesn't any provide protection from theft, but with the tinted windows, it's difficult to see the contents of the vehicle, and I have a large lockable toolbox in the back.

The snow blade come off and on in just a matter of minutes.

Nothing as robust as what some of you drive:
