I like the Jeep but there doesn't seem to be many options for a roof rack which seems really odd.

I was gonna refer him to the same site JEC. There are a lot of options to choose from. You could even add your own design if you want too.

I usually drive an e30 BMW 325, but it's currently out of commission so lately i've been driving my weekend car which is a nissan 240sx that's slammed so low i get stuck on speed bumps. useless for anything other than a smooth paved road. the thought of traversing dunes sends shivers up my spine.

Japan was never a colony, but you and your southern neighbors were ;-)a

BTW I spend 8 months of my year in India, they drive on whatever side of the road takes their fancy :-)

The most important lesson I've learned about 4 wheel drive (or AWD) is it allows you to get stuck in more inaccessable places. Once stuck, it is harder to get someone to rescue you.

I drive Subaru Impreza for my normal travels where I don't expect to get off-road. I drive our Subaru Forester when I anticipate possible minor off road excursions. Either way, I always remember my lesson learned above . . .

I converted a van this year, which is now what I use.
It has running water, a small fridge, bed, power for laptop and camera charging (from campervan battery), curtains, and storage under the bed which contains the gas cooker.
