So as many of you know, I bought two b800s as well as some other goodies in preperation for this year's basketball/wrestling seasons. Well I have been extremely busy finishing up football but the local team that I cover for the booster club had their annual scrimmage. This was my first time using the strobes in this gym, so I want some help on my lighting technique. Thanks all.

"strobes middle of the court 1 pointed each way. off court on left.. "

In the middle of the court? Very Good shots you have there.. you all good ceilings to bounce off of...My gym has a RED ceiling..
are you doing a lot of strobe / meter adjustments before hanging the lights... what about fall off in the corners are you seeing any of that happening...?
thanks,
Joe

actually joe I am not hanging the lights. Super clamps are a wonderful thing :). anyway. I see virtually no fall off in the corners on the far end away from the lights.. its a pretty even spread to the ends.

Good stuff Dave. If anything, I think you might consider 3.2 or 400 ISO. I like the 3.2 since you are going to be noiseless (more or less at 500) ISO with your gear but the 3.2 would help on the subject exposure and crisp things up nicely at the same time. At least that's what a newb like me would try. Nice job man.

I personally don't care for the way the light is falling from this setup. 1, 2 and 4 I think one side of the face is too hot and then too dark on the other. Shot 5 is similar for the same reason. The light appears very even when you measure it toward the strobes but is very uneven across your subjects when they are oriented toward the goals. Kinda like shooting from the north end zone when the sun is setting.

The shots from the side like 3 and 6 look OK but that is a tough angle to shoot for most of the action.

The shot from your second post has by far the most natural and even look to it because the light is even left to right.

I think you would get more natural looking shots if you could find a way to mount the strobes at the end, on each side of the court.

Just my $0.02

Agree with Big K. They seem a tad dark. Light is even though:)

I agree with Big K about the players being 'hot' on one side and darker on the other. Your best skin tones are on #7 where the light is more even. There is another effect to point out with mounting strobes on the side of the court.

The backgrounds are very bright--brighter than your subjects. That effect is seen in #1 and #8. Placing strobes in the traditional location has the effect of lighting the faces of your subjects bright and evenly as they face the basket and then the light intensity falls off toward the background when shooting from the baseline area. The background is de-emphasized and the player is highlighted. IMHO, that is a more pleasing look.

Bottom line, these images are OK but you should be able to improve them by moving the strobes to the end of the gym. Even light will allow you to get more ideal skin tones and light fall off will work in your favor.

classic...

I would say stick with the traditional placement of the strobes. If they are on clamps it should be extremely easy to move at halftime if you are just covering one team.
