I've been thinking about going in to photography full time, but I'm not sure exactly where to start. I know it's not easy getting your name out there and stuff. What can I expect if I go in to a career in photography?

There is little chance of any success if you wake up in the morning one day and say to yourself "I think I'm going to be a professional photographer".. You'll have the arse hanging out of your pants and the debt collectors at your front door..

Unless you snag a staff job, becoming a fulltime working pro takes many months, even years to get to a point where you will start to earn a good living..

All the photography skills and equipment won't help.. You need business skills, a network and most importantly,,, clients..

Yeah. I know it would be hard, but I'm looking at options now, and photography is one of them. I wouldn't just jump right in to it obviously. If I do choose to do that, I'd want to take classes and whatnot to learn as much as I can.

Don't leave your day job.. Build up a client base and get your name out there.. Don't choose any generic genre but look at something more specific at the moment..

You'll have more success if you take a business course or something similar.. Work on your marketing skills..
