Rebel XS vs. XSi

I'm new to the world of dSLR's looking to get into it as a hobby. I'm fairly fluent with photoshop and after taking and editing many 'artistic' shots with P & S cameras I'm ready to make the jump to a dSLR. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to purchase the XSi or just get the XS and spend the extra money on a larger SD card and start saving for a better lens. Would I get more out of the XSi as a new user? I don't want to spend the extra money on the XSi if I'm not going to know what to do with half of the functions. I figured I'd ask you guys what the logical choice would be. Thanks in advance.

Get the XS. I don't know about you, but here the price difference is > Rs.10000 ($200)
You'd get a 50mm f/1.8, larger capacity SD card and a cheap camera bag with the saved money.
Oh and you're not really losing out on image quality either.

Can you suggest some lenses to choose from as well as some good camera bag / card choices with the difference? Sorry for all the questions I'm just trying to get the most bang for my buck.

Here take this https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=785920 off my hands and I'll throw in a Sigma EX DG 24-70f2.8 (Canon mount of course) for another $300

The ONLY reason I'm letting it go is for upgrading to another 1D series body.

PM me if ya want more details :)

On a budget the 50mm f/1.8 and the 18-55 IS is not bad glass at all.
I like SanDisk cards myself. Swiss Army makes a nice camera bag that is also affordable.

I would go for the XSi. it is a downer to *know* that you have the bottom of the line camera for SLRs. it performs just fine from what I hear, but the percieved quality is not all that great. body feels especially cheep, and it lacks several features. If you want an SLR, I assume you want better IQ, and that means you want RAW. the XSi shoots RAW 2x faster than the XS. XS is 1.5 FPS RAW, XSI is ~3.5. You decide.

The grip on the XSi feels better, the LCD is larger and easier to read, and the plastic body is overall better looking.

spend the extra bucks and get a refurb XSi.

I'm sorry, but have you ever actually used the XS? The built quality isn't different from the XSi and the T1i except for the grip. Yes, I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but this is the plain truth. If you need better build quality, you're looking at the XXD line and not the Rebels.
Shooting 2X times faster doesn't mean better IQ. Check my flickr, I'm no pro, I've managed to nail some action shots with the XS and its 1.5fps.
A price difference of > $200 definitely was the deal breaker for me and from what I see in the OP's post, is a similar thing for him too.

I have an XSi and I absolutely love it. I totally recommend it. It'll be better down the road.

The XS produces great images. I've owned the XS and the XSi and I have no problem recommending the XS to someone on a tight budget. The money saved can buy a lot of accessories as already mentioned. With the current Bing offers the XS with the capable 18-55 IS lens can be purchased for less than $450 net.

Same deal with me about the whole $200 difference. Of course, that's buying new. I'm sure it's different buying used, etc. But yeah, that $200 went towards a 55-250 and I have no regrets.

xsi with 18-55 $569

get whatever you want, but I feel you will be happier with the XSi. I was :) (until I got my T1i)

no. However, my sister's friend has one. from what I understand, it has better IQ than my T1i, but it's fewer MP (so I can't crop as much) and it's slower, has a dinkier screen, doesn't do video and blah blah blah.

if you want a CAMERA that does STILLS and nothing else, go for it. I kindof like having video, and really like having the nice screen for reviewing pics on.
