A good friend asked me to take some photos of her and her children - this is her favorite so far, but how can I improve it, now with PP, and before what should I have done while shooting?

The white of the daughter's shirt seems blown out - what else could I work on?

Thanks for your help.

here is my take on it

I much prefer that photo in black and white. Removing the distraction of color makes my eye wander around the scene less and focus on the family.

BW is good, first feels like it's lacking a lot of contrast.

Thank everyone.

So more contrast the first one? The mother would like this one in color. Thanks!

I sharpened. Cropped to get the blown background out. Curves adjustment. Might not be any better but thought I would give it a try

Crop and edit definitely works better than the first. There are some compositional and technical elements that you may want to look at:

  • Mother is holding the daughter's hands, but are cut off.
  • Adjust the pose so that the plants aren't growing out of their heads. For the son in particular, it looks like a sunburst with his head at the vertex
  • I would have maybe shot it a little bit more wide-open to narrow the depth of field
Those are nitpicks, however. The edited version, I think, looks very good and I'm sure the mother is happy with it!

My try... overlay layer about 14%, USM, crop and then burn the foliage.

Upped contrast, clarity, vibrance and overall exposure. Darkened and blurred background a tad. Slight sharpening on faces. Added slight vignetting to help lead the eye to focus points.
Still doesn't look right to me though, but then again it's a JPG and this took me less than 5 minutes.

I love the edits, miles of improvement over my original post.

Thanks for the tips as well! :)

definitely like the last one best, excellent edit. Seems a little warmer, too - good job.
