This comes straight from engadget what does everyone think?

Touchscreens are still something of a novelty on regular point-and-shoot cameras, but it looks like they may now already be starting to make their trek to DSLRs -- at least if a recently published patent application from Canon is any indication. Of course, a "touchscreen for a DSLR" is a bit tricky to patent on its own, so Canon is taking a slightly more unique approach: attempting to patent a touchscreen that prevents you from accidentally touching things when you hold the camera up to your face. That includes letting you register your dominant eye when you set up the camera, which will in turn automatically disable the portion of the screen more likely to be touched when you go to take a shot using the viewfinder. The patent application also covers what could be controlled using the touchscreen, including settings like the focus detection area, flash adjustment, ISO, white balance, and exposure correction, to name a few -- all of which will surely be welcome to some, but we just hope the touchscreens will be accompanied by at least a few buttons and knobs for us old curmudgeons

I don't use the back screen for anything other than to review composition and histograms. I don't need a touch screen.

+1 i agree. Ive used point and shoots from my friends which are full touch screen and its a slow interface. Buttons are much faster as touch screen i think is a novelty feature.

Interesting...

Personally I prefer buttons I can find without having to look but I suppose this is inevitable.

I know the flying community is scratching their collective head over Garmin's latest portable aviation GPS which is all touch screen. Same arguments there regarding tactile feel and buttons.

Def agree with you. Its inevitable as with video that touch screen would come at some point. I personally own an iphone with three buttons on it (home button, power button, and ring/silence button) and everything else touch screen. It works as good as it does because i cant go back to using a regular phone since its much quicker to get to everything with the iphone OS. But thats just it. Its about the OS versus just the iphone touch screen. If canon develops a good enough OS to go with the touch screen and some physical buttons it could work.

i bet you i can type faster on a keyed phone than an iphone?!
i miss being able to type without looking on a keyed phone rather than the iphone.. i have to look at the iphone to type :( but that's a small complaint. the iphone's been great - just too bad so many people have it now it doesn't make me feel special anymore

I hear that it is so you can control some functions with your nose as you look through the viewfinder. Really!

Thats apparently what canon is patenting
