I swear December is always the best month of the year. I start getting in the holiday spirit, I get a bunch of new toys and goodies on X-mas, and all the features I submitted in the summer months finally start going to print. So far this December has lent two covers, three features, and two calendar pics.

I originally shot this RX7 when I covered Formula Drift Atlanta for Jtuned. The Formula Drift guys were reluctant to let me shoot the FD on any other place on the grounds, aside from this crappy, grassy knoll. The location was awful and all the magazines passed on it. Luckily, the editor of Modified knew the owner, Phil Sohn, personally and asked if I'd like to make the 8 hour road trip down to Birmingham to reshoot the RX7 with the owner's other car, a very rare, Mazda Cosmo. As soon as I heard the words "cover feature", I hopped in my car and made the long journey south. I think it was well worth it, as this is my first cover that is legitimately all me. No compositing by an art director or anything. It's super surreal to see your photograph on the cover of a magazine that you have been reading for 8 years. Big thanks go out to Phil for being such a gracious host and making this possible.

On to the pics...

Here's a quick before and after. Obviously multiple exposures were involved. The before shot you see below was just the exposure for the car. I also took one a couple stops down to expose for the blown out trees. And then another exposure was used for the cosmo. Peter, the editor of Modified had me really push the color of the FD to differentiate it from the background.

This is more along the lines of the actual color. Blue, with tinges of green in the highlights.

I know it's not every ones thing, but I loved the edge lighting on this one.

This was actually a recycled shot from the first time I shot the car. Completely different lighting conditions so the paint looks a bit flatter.

And some of the Srt-4 I shot over 2 years ago I think. Was scheduled to go into Turbo before it died. When Turbo did go kaput, Modified decided to pick it up.

Jeez mate this is some real classy work! Straight up some of the best car shots i've seen around here. Would you mind sharing a bit on the lighting/processing side of things, for those of us new to the game?

As a landscape photographer and car enthusiast i've been trying to learn the skill of car photography, but it just seems auto photogs are so protective of their methods they never want to help us out haha. Anyways, either way this stuff is really top notch. Well done mate, and congrats on the cover too!

Excellent work! Congrats on the cover of your own work!

I know it's not every ones thing, but I loved the edge lighting on this one.

I like what you did with that & all the reflections look good. You might have turned the wheel a little? ;)
