I had another post regarding the xsi and the xs. I'm leaning towards the xs however I'm wondering what the stance is on used equipment. Is it trustworthy? Do warranties hold? If you guys have had experience with used equipment please share it with me as I'm looking for the best deal possible (either xsi or xs depending on the deal as I'm trying to save a few dollars). Thanks.

I'll take refurbs over used.
i got my 40D as a refurb from adorama.
it LOOKS like NEW, WORKS like NEW with only 13 actuations when I got it xD

P.S. Adorama gives you "adorama 1 year warranty" for refurbed canons.

Refurbs have the chance of turning out better then new because someone personally runs it through its paces instead of being mass produced. I bought my XTi refurbished from Adorama, a month later I had problems of a line running through each picture, called them up and they replaced it free of charge.

I've sent bought all the rest of my gear used off POTN though

I just bought a 40D that was a fully refurbished from Canon and it works like a champ. Normally something refurbed is in pretty much brand new condition because they (at least are supposed to) take it apart, clean it up, replace anything that looks worn and run it through all the tests again to make sure it meets the standard. Plus like Igunnz said, someone has already put it to the test before so it's been broken in.

I have purchased refurbished items fromAdoroma (external link) also and I have nothing bad to say about it. I have purchased a refurb 24-70mm and 2 refurb 40D cams from them and I would not hesitate to buy anything else from them.

I have also purchased a lot of used gear from this forum as well. There are a lot of great sellers on here but please make sure you verify who you are dealing with.

Check out demos. I bought a Nikon D60 demo from Cameta Camera off ebay that was brand spanking new with less than 40 actuations. I believe they have a deal with Nikon to sell of their demos, too bad they don't have such a deal with Canon. Not sure any store does.

Yes. It's how many times the shutter has been actuated.

Since Canon reset it during the refurb process ;)

I would trust a Canon refurb to be better than used .. without a doubt.

Now I would never buy another refurb'd TomTom GPS unit .. those are very hit and miss, no QC at at

Which ever is cheaper, If I can get a used one that I trust the seller and is in great shape, cheaper then a refurb I would go with it. Never know how the refurb was treated.
Not sure Canon tears them down and rebuilds them. Problably just look at the issue and fix it. At a store they can't resale a return so they might just package them as a refurb and resale it.

I'll take Canon refurb over Canon new. Costs less, specific quirks resolved and tested, 3-months warranty. What else can you ask for?

Canon refurbs have a one year warranty at Adorama.

I purchased a refurb 50D from adorama, it was in mint condition but it did come with 3901 actuations on it - just so you know not to expect that you'll get one that has less than 100. I was surprised to see the shutter count but the camera performed perfectly!
