Pham anytime you have a hair part like that you should probably bring the light in from the part side to avoid the shadow that you would have gotten if the light weren't so low. I think your strobe should have been on the other side and bit higher up. Still love it though.

Beautiful! Great shot. Is this a single strobe light setup?

allen,

by lighting her the way i did, was able to short light her, but to do your suggested will end up broad lighting her..

so i would rather short light any subjects than broad.. though i under stand your point with the hair part.

i didn't have a boom a that time, so i couldn't bring the light up that high then..

cheers from the phamster..

do you have some new stuff to share?

If there was a way to buy stock in Phamster, I would. Forget about Paul C. Buff signed Ab stuff, I want Phamster signed gear.

The light main is to low in my opinion and if it were up where it should be would have left a huge shadow covering her eye. And main is so low and so flat it looks more like butterfly just off center slightly. Usually you use a broad or a short light to create shadows to make a face appear thinner (short) or rounder/fuller (broad) and its the shadows on the face that create this illusion. In this particular shot there is really no shadows.

Pham If I didn't think you had good chops I wouldn't be waisting my time commenting.

Broad lighting is not automatically a bad thing. There are some GREAT fashion photographs that were lit with broad lighting. Most models have very thin faces and a broad light can make a face more round. Usually a short light is preferred if you have a heavy model but when you have a thin model with a great face you shouldn't throw out that possibility of a broad light. Scavullo didn't limit himself and often used a broad light. As did Skrebneski and almost every other great fashion photographer.

Why do you think a broad light would not have worked in this situation?
