Hey everyone. I have a question. How does your copy do from 50-70mm? I have read some reviews that state that the lens isn't so sharp at the end of the range. I have the Tamron 17-50, and find myself at 50mm all the time, wishing for more reach. So I would use the 50-70mm a lot, if I had it. I'd hate to get rid of my lens (which is sharp!) for this one, if the image quality from 50-70mm isn't that great.

Thanks for any advice!

Its not too sharp wide open at the long end, but when you stop it down by 2/3rds of a stop even it gets much better. Take a look at the portraits I've taken with this lens on my flickr, they're all at ~55mm without any sharpening in post.

Hi!

My experience is quite mixed with this lens. I have extensively tested my lens and think it performs better at shorter focusing distances than at "infinity". In my sample the corner sharpness is very bad at longer focal lenghts and only at about 60-70 mm the corner sharpness is somewhat decent. I personally can not trust this lens to deliver sharp images. It might be sample variation but certainly this sample is not worth it's price. And, I haven't noticed any ff or bf, the pics just aren't sharp at corners.

Could you post some images to show the softness? If it is a bad copy, then you should try and send it to sigma to get it fixed, because a normal copy of this lens is very nice.

Hmm. The problem is like keeping a soap in your hand, it seems to work sometimes well, and sometimes not so well. Many times I get blurred ends or only blurred corner. I suspect it is the OS system causing the lenses not to align properly. I might not be interested to put up those pics on my flickr stream. But, I am considering giving it to inspection to Sigma repair. I though have to be certain how to explain the problem to them.

In some pics it seems that the plane of focus is very curved, the ends of the pics are closer focused than the middle. In fact I have taken successfully pics like this, that have ends closer to the lens than the middle, where I have focused:

Yes the lens is a nice combination of characteristics, quite sharp (when ever it is), near focusing, effective OS, etc. My use for this focal lenght range is though limited (I use mostly the 70-200mm) and so this lens with its problems has been left quite unused.

I'm not sure what the problem in that picture is? It just looks like distortion, I don't see any indication of focusing issues.

Eh, that pic was meant to show that the curve of plane of focus is working here for good. In pics, that are of flat subject, the focus might show these issues. I have a copy of a swedish photo magazine FOTO 4/2010 that has sharpness curves of this lens at different focal lenghts and at different aperture, and the curves especially at the wide end is really odd, the center is sharp, then falloff, and at smaller apertures again gain in sharpness towards extreme corners. Might be sample variation, but it might also be one of this lens' 'normal' weaknesses.

I've had the this lens (the non-OS version) for several years and would never part with it. I'm not a pro but am an awarded photog that gets images published regularly.

It's sharp all the way through and don't experience issues with corner sharpness and have seen many shots from much more expensive lenses that do not as well as we as the $400 offering from Sigma.

I too do little to my shots after shooting with the 17-70 - little sharpness applied and any PS work is just for artistic reasons. It's a great lens. IMHO if you are not getting great results I'd first suggest looking at your ability and realistic expectations of what a lens can do.
