And it is quite different then what I am used to!

I first did it with RGB controls and it seemed to give a yellow cast... But I then did it, after resetting all defaults on my monitor with just the backlight calibration, but the result was identical.

Either my monitor was that bad or the calibration is all wrong.

I will just have to get some prints done to really check I suppose... But any other tips/suggestions to verify how accurate the display is now? I mean, maybe I just have to get used to it and the stock settings were just heavy on the blue saturation?

I just compared to a photo I printed out of my own printer and the colors are fairly close... I will have to compare some lab prints I have laying around.

Thanks!

How old is you monitor?

Is it a LCD?

How are you images within your editing app looking?

It is a LCD, it is a Dell SP2008WFP.

I guess the BIG difference are blues... From looking at the pre-to-post calibration examples, the pre was heavily "cool" in color. Even after just getting used to the new calibration for the past hour or so, when I switch back to look at the non-calibrated display it looks more "off" to me then the new one now.

So I guess that is a good thing, I was just shocked with the change. Very "cool" cast before and more neutral now, but it looks so warm compared. But again, it was very cool before...

I will get some prints this weekend and see how accurate it all is. But from really looking now, it should be better.

in my experience, most monitors by default come looking very cool, whether they be macs or pcs. if that's your first time ever calibrating a monitor, that's a pretty normal shock.

Yep, first time... I want to start doing a lot more printing so I decided it would be worth the money to buy the calibration kit so I get better results. Some of the shots I had printed before I did this came out looking different (either for better, or worse). So hopefully this will be much more consistent.

You quickly get used to it.
I remember a few years ago, it was quite a jolt when I calibrated my monitor.

Yes, i also found my monitor to be much warmer looking after I calibrated it. It was much cooler looking before (Samsung LCD).

I just had a few 8x10's printed and the color seems to be spot on! Very impressed with the accuracy the spyder was able to match the LCD to my prints!

I highly recommend the spyder3!

I calibrated my LCDs with a Huey and also found the result much warmer than the monitor's default. Did you notice the LCD being more sensitive to viewing angle (particularly vertical) after calibration? Mine get warmer as I lower my head. I didn't notice my height having as much impact on the color temp before calibrating.

Sounds like you got a shock at the lengths monitor makers will go to to get their screens looking "good".

I had the same shock when i did the same with mine but printing is a breeze once its done as the printer and monitor are only fractionally different as opposed to the huge difference before. Never again will you have to "guesstimate" the amount to lighten your image to get it to print properly or worry about whether the WB is actually right.
