Is anyone using the 7D at this time for youth hockey? I'm currently using a 20D with a 70-200 2.8 and I'm ready to upgrade. Can I shoot 3200 iso without much noise? The rinks up here in the PNW are dark and poorly lit. Last game it seemed that every lamp was a different color and there were too few of them. Will the 7D increase the keeper rate under these conditions?

thanks

I am a beginner - i had purchased a 20d used over the summer and couldn't get any useful hockey pictures at f/4 so i purchased a 7d. I find for hockey and other sports the af is getting me more keepers and i am relatively happy with 3200 iso and the high fps. hoping to get a 2.8 next year. I would imagine the 7d and your 2.8 would be a killer combo. post some of your pictures...

this is 3200 iso, f/4, 1/500th through the glass
didn't do much post on this - still learning - i think it needs sharpening

this one is probably 3200 - can't see here at work - but you can see the noise

I shot one game (well more of a scrimmage since no officials and no goalies) with my 7D last week.
I had shot hockey with other cameras before, mostly recently with the 5DII.
The arena here is dark. My preferred exposure is iso 6400 f4 1/500th, sometimes iso 3200 f2.8 1/500.
I set white balance with an expodisc. It helps although the lights cycle anyway so some shots look to be coloured differently. Still I think the expodisc is the best solution as the brightest shots tend to come out ok and setting WB off the ice has not worked that well for me.
I shot JPGs with standard NR set in the camera.
I was pleasantly surprised with the 7D at the hockey game.
I posted a lot of pictures from the "game" at

and posted initial thoughts at

Almost all shot from the one elevated position (above the tinted glass) in one corner of the arena.
Used 70-200 f2.8 lens (IS disabled). Sometimes I wish I had a zoom that was longer, the 300mm f2.8 is not very flexible and very heavy to hold for long. Ideally would bring a second camera with a wider lens too, especially for shots from behind the goals.
Did not really notice any focus issues, the 8 fps is great to have.
