My Computer Can't See CR2 files?!? Not even in EOSViewerUtility!

Just got a 20D on Friday. Took some shots in RAW and downloaded to my comp at work and viewed/edited them in EOSViewerUtility 1.2 (came with the camera). Went home and tried the same thing.........nothing!! None of the Canon Utilities sees them on the camera to even download, neither does PSCS. It sees Jpeg files no problem though.

So I cam back to work and burned all the CR2 files to disk and then downloaded them to comp at home. Still nothing can see the CR2 files EXCEPT Rawshooter which I had to download!

Both my work and home computers are running WinXp Pro SP2.

Anyone have any insight to this? Rawshooter seems cool and I was able to convert everything to TIFF in the meantime, but I have no clue why the Canon and Adobe software can't see them???

Windows xp does not support raw files (it will in the next release). You need to convert the raw files to either TIFF or JPEG, but you should be able to see it in EOSViewerUtility.

Yeah, nothing like taking a nice simple 8mb RAW file and changing it into a monstrous 20mb TIFF file! Damn Microsoft! But I was able to see CRW files in PSCS and all Canon Utility software, so these CR2 files are boggling me. Especially since I can see them on my work system! I'm trying to find out whats different about it from my home machine.

XP may not support RAW, but EOS View Utility certainly does, as does Photoshop and Photoshop Elements 3. If there's a problem opening RAW files with these programs, it is not because of Windows not supporting the files. Something else is blocking this.

This might work - Drag the files off the CD and onto your hard drive in a separate folder so that you can easily find them. Then, try right-clicking on the file in My Computer or Windows Explorer and select "open with" - then, select EOS View Utility.

Yeah, that's just what I was thinking.

But I'll try setting the "Open With" when I get home later tonight! I didn't think of that!

Did you have older software from a 300D/D60/etc on the PC before? And if so did you install the software that came with a 20D?

To me this really is a non-issue. Use a card reader and DIM from http://alanlight.com (external link) to get the images off the card, the use Photoshop to process them. The only time I use the Canon software is when I want to check what focus point I used, and I only do that once a month or so. Make sure you're using the latest version of the software, if it doesn't work forget about the Canon software and go take pictures!

I believe I'm correct that both Photoshop and the Canon programs will support the 20D CR2 files IF you have the latest plugin/version. If you get to the XT CR2 files, you will need to use the latest plugin for Photoshop, but only Photoshop CS2 and Elements 3 will be able to use that plugin. I don't use the Canon programs much, but I think the latest software will handle your files. It has nothing to do with XP, though they are coming out with some kind of program of their own.

I did still have the software that I loaded from my G5 that I will delete and see what happens. And then hit the website to make sure I have all the latest and greatest.

As far as it being a 'non issue' I'm not so sure. The biggest problem/scare for me was that my computer wouldn't recognize the CR2 files on my camera and came back and said there was nothing on there! But I plan on picking up a card reader tomorrow. I was holding out on one until I upgraded my pc so that I could just stick one in the 3.5 in front bay and not have to have it external. But now I'll just get an external one which I could travel with if need be.

Thanks again!;)

Jim, are you talking about the "raw" plugin for PS??

I guess now that I have a 20D I'm gonna HAVE to get CS2 huh?!!?
Anyone use that Rawshooter consistently?? It seems to work pretty good, but I don't have a clue where all the controls are and am spending way to much time on it.

No, I think you will be fine with the 20D. It's when you get to the Rebel XT that you will have the problem. As I understand it ACR 2.4 supports the 20D and it works with CS.

The G5 software definitely won't recognise the 20D CR2 files, I know because I had a similar problem when I upgraded from 300D to 20D. Uninstall, throw in the install disk that came with the 20D, then get the updates from the canon web site, you should be in business.
