I was thinking of picking up one of these as my next lens.

Does any body have any experience using the Sigma?

Other than the constant 2.8 on the the Tamron they seem a lot alike I think the Sigma is 2.8 only to about 20mm . The difference in price is huge the Sigma about $250 the Tamron $600 any thoughts?

Thanks,Alan

The better comparison would be the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 macro, not their 2.8-4.5 variant, unless you really need stabilization. I would dare say the Tamron will beat the OS Sigma in IQ, but if you go with the Sigma 2.8 macro, then the differences are much, much less. The Tamron will have a tiny edge in IQ and lag behind the Sigma a little bit in build quality from what I have seen. The IQ difference is so little it isn't noticeable in prints.

Thank you for the response so it looks like If the IQ is basically the same other than losing 2.8 past 20mm and since I do want IS and for the huge price difference the Sigma is the better choice?

Alan

I don't know the IQ of this f2.8-4.5 sigma lens. I was speaking to the 18-50 f2.8 constant Sigma lens, it is very good.

I agree with TeamSpeed in saying that the Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC should be compared to the Sigma 18-50 2.8 Macro. I've got the Sigma and I love it. I've never used a VC lens (or IS, OS, etc.) so I really can't say if I would miss it. But I'm very satisfied with the IQ from my Sigma.

Pretty happy with my Sigma 18-50 2.8 Macro as well. I'd skip the variable aperture model.
