This is the first pic I take after custom setting the camera. Poor light but Im still new to all this. Comments? suggestions please :confused: I need to boost my photo technique before christmas to get some good shots by then

Blatant plugging aside - you're off to a good start by engaging your cat and getting eye contact. Technically, you have bad lighting. The light source is either behind or directly above the animal, when you ideally want it coming from over your shoulder. Contrast is a little high and you've cut off part of his whiskers. The DoF is perfect and you've managed to focus on his eyes, which is tricky when the AF has a tendency to lock onto the bridge of their nose.

nice. What about light, what setting is what is going to make her face with less shadows without turning out noisy or without setting the shutter to slow since these cats wont stay still unless they sleep :)

I prefer to work in natural light. Get the cat in the shade and you'll have a nice even that'll allow you to avoid strong contrast. There's nothing you can do about posing the animal other than to chimp it and try, try, try again.
