My Canon 7D arrived last Wednesday and I've been really happy with it. All of my pictures came out perfectly sharp. Around 10 minutes ago I've been fiddling with the custom functions for Autofocus/Drive and wanted to see if setting the 'Lens drive when AF impossible' to 'focus search off' will suit my need (C.FnIII 4-1). So later I turned that feature back on (C.FnIII 4-0) and tried focusing a subject. It focused perfectly fine until after the 3rd or 4th attempt to focus a subject, it was not able to do so. So up until now I'm having a problem with autofocus. When I half press the shutter button the lens rake back and forth searching for a subject to focus. It will not focus at all. However in live view mode, it can focus. The lens I'm using is a 50mm f1.4 and it's the only lens I have.

Is there anyway i can fix this? Do I return this camera back to the online store or to Canon?

Thanks in advance.

You tried resetting custom functions in the menu yet? It's worth a shot.

Yes, still no go. Is it possible to do a hard reset on this camera?

I assume the 7D has a "reset all camera settings" as well as a CF reset. Reset both of these and remove the battery for a few minutes. This tends to clear weird electrical gremlins - worked recently with my MkIII.

I will try that. I'm crossing my fingers.

Good luck. I don't know if this is a "real" fix, but, like most electronics, resetting to default and removing power tends to clear up issues. BTW, per Canon there is no way to technically "reboot" the camera.

Look like luck is not on my side. Thanks though. I will have to contact Canon tomorrow.

Clean the mirror box. You are about the fiftyeleventh EOS owner I've heard about with this kind of problem. Is almost always some dirt

  1. On the main mirror.
  2. On the AF sub-mirror.
  3. On the AF secondary image forming optics.
I case you don't know where these parts are, come back.

How could it be dirt when I just got the camera and lens brand new? I will be willing to try it out though. Where could these parts be?

Sometimes the camera manufacturers are kind enough to deliver the camera complete with dirt for you, so you don't need to find any on your own. Wouldn't be the first time.

The main mirror is what you see when you remove the lens.
The sub-mirror is behind it, normally hidden. It's visible if you lift the main mirror up a little, but be careful now, since it's easy to destroy something in there, and the warranty will not cover you messing your camera up.
The AF optics are at the bottom of the mirror box, below the mirror.

Use a rocket blower or similar to create some turbulence inside the mirror box. If you have something fluffy sitting in a bad place, it may fly out, or at least move to some other place.
