Yoyo
I wish I could help out. Not sure what might be going on with your lens. I would think it would on your 10D.

Hmm, well I'm gonna keep experimenting with it and see. So is it normal that one lens might need a higher ISO than another lens(to get correct exposure) even if they have the same aperture and shutter speeds set in the camera?

also I really liked your photo, the reflection and lines are great.

Sounds like the apperture on your lens is stuck to a high one hence it is so dark in the viewfinder (is it like when you press the depth of field preview button on the side of the 10D when using your Canon lens and a high apperture?)

Some Sigma lenses don't work with digital bodies unless the firmware of the lens is upgraded. Does the lens work ok on other canon bodies?

Also if the autofocus isn't working then it might be a totally faulty lens.

Yeah I think you might be right about it being stuck at a high aperture. When I look into the lens, I see the aperture blades, and the opening is very small like 5mm in diameter.

I THINK I just fixed it. Thanks for telling me to press the DOF preview button, once I pressed that it opened the aperture back up to what it should be!(and it will close it back up if i press again lol) So I think this lens probably does need to be rechipped or something, but for now I think it's semi-fixed! Also, the autofocus now works, it must have not been working because the aperture was stuck.

edit: so actually I don't think the aperture works, the camera can only either set it wide open, or totally closed.

Just wanted to look for some upgrade opinions. I would like to upgrade my 10D, not replace it. I love my 10D, and plan to keep it as a 2nd body, however need better performance in one particular area - low light, and/or higher ISO shooting. I love night photography, and lightpainting/strobist work. I currently have a gripped 10D, EF series I 75-300mm IS f4-5.6, EF series I 50mm macro f2.5, Tamron 28-300 f3.5-6.3 and two Quantaray QDC-900WA flashes. With long exposures I get a lot of noise, and have to deal with that in post. Will I get better performance from the sensors in a 20/30D, or do I just need to jump to the 40/50D? If I have left anything out, or more info is needed, please let me know. Thanks.

Good question focal.designs, I wish I could help.

And, here's what I think are some nice colors.

Hi Everyone,

I was recently taking some pictures in some woods (shady) and using ISO 400 I was getting shutter speeds of 1/30-1/90. I was quite disappointed with some of the images not being tack sharp and it really shows on faces in portraits (slightly blurred).

I thought it would be nice to get a lens with an image stabiliser for the 10D body. I want a used one and was looking at Canon 28-135mm IS or Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4 OS or Sigma 18-125mm OS. I like the range of the Sigma 18-125mm. I'm not too fussed about wide apertures as I would like more depth of field rather than blurry backgrounds (nifty fifty covers that one).

So do any of you have experience of these lenses and do you think I am on the right track to sharper images at slow shutter speeds? How many stops do the IS give me?

Thanks.

Hi Silps,

In my experience using IS does make a huge difference, a couple of stops at least with a static subject. I have used the Canon 28-135mm IS and it is a surprisingly good lens though not too wide on this body.

If you can find a cheap battery grip this can really help as well, I normally use !D series bodies and the extra inertia seems to make quite a difference to stability. The other thing that sometimes gets overlooked is breathing and smooth shutter technique which can gain a stop with practise.

have fun and post some pix!
