Thinking about picking up a used 1D MKIII now that the prices are falling like rocks. Most of my lenses, however, are meant for APS-C cameras. Sigma 30mm 1.4 and Tokina 10-17 fisheye are prime examples. I know EF-S lenses wont fit the camera, but will these other third party lenses work on APS-H cameras? Will there just be vignetting, or will the lens not fit/hit the sensor/mirror?

Thanks!

The only way to tell for sure might be to try the lens on the camera.... Unless you happen to find some folks here who have experimented with using the exact same lens on a 1.3X crop camera.

I can tell you that the 12-24/4 Tokina I have primarily for use on my crop sensor cameras will also work to about 18 or 19mm on full frame 5D MkII, before it starts vignetting noticeably.

Now, there's more wide angle distortion effects with the 12-24 on the FF camera than there is with the 20/2.8 I'd usually use. So, it's not an ideal solution. But it works, in a pinch.

The Sigma 30 will work on 1.3 crop. Noticeable vignette and soft corners at f/1.4 to f/4 and mechanical vignette (pure black corners) from f/4 and up. It is still very useable in low light at near wide-open apertures though. No problems with hitting the mirror on 1.3 crop with this lens.

No idea about the Tokina, but I assume it will work to some degree.

Thanks for the info Cesium -- Nothing a minor crop can't fix. Or I can just pretend it is a free vignette action! :)

I think I read elsewhere that the tokina works on a full frame at 15mm and 16mm.... so I would guess it would work on the APS-H at 13mmish?

This is what I do

In reality, at f/1.4 to f/1.8 the vignette is not any more noticeable than on 1.6 crop. This is where I tend to shoot this lens all the time anyway.

That is excellent news actually -- That is generally what I do as well, max at F/2 on that lens.

Yep, they will work, but as mentioned, will vignette. The EF-S mount has a protruding rear baffle that would break the mirror, that the other manufacturers like Sigma do not have.

So I found a website with a bunch of test shots with the sigma 30 1.4 and the 1d MK II. The vignette is barely even noticeable until about f/2.8 , which is awesome for me, because I rarely use this lens at smaller apertures than that.

For anyone interested, here is the link: http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp …view/2005/06/30/1833.html (external link)

I'd like to see more info on this subject. Crop lenses on 1.3 cameras: which ones work well and which ones not so much...

It's a pretty interesting subject.

I've seen some good shots from a Tokina 11-16 on a 1.3 crop somewhere on this site.
