I'm a professional because I always have my camera set on "P" for professional.
Before that I used "A" for amateur.
I also used "M" for magic for a little while.

Hey all,

I would like to ask: What is your level in photography? how do you know your photography level if you are not a pro or even semi-pro?

I'm an eleven.

Seriously, I'm either shooting for me or I'm shooting freelance work. When the shots are for me, I judge my own work by how much it pleases me. I will note that I'm less pleased with some older stuff that I used to like better now that I know more.

When I shoot for pay what matters is if I meet the customers needs. So far so good. Most people I've done photography for have told me they were very pleased with my work. Maybe they were just being polite.

What makes a photographer a pro or semi pro, by earning money in photography only? If not earning money in photography yet, what level he is now?

I feel 'professional' just means that this is one's job. I've seen some professional photographers that were not very good.

So saying 'he's a professional photographer' can't automatically mean someone is good. They might just be good businessmen or be great at marketing and self promotion.

And my private or personal question is: What is my level now [I am talking about myself]? definitely not a pro/semi-pro

Focus on pleasing yourself. Study photos from others that you like and learn from them. Take photography on as a hobby even if you are working it for money in the sense of always trying to learn and improve.

Thank you very much for your post, at least logical words.

i keep doing photography to satisfy myself for sure, and i am happy with what i am doing now and i have good enough work, but i also talking about what you should call or level yourself in photography, sometimes people asking you this question either as curiosity or as necessary for profile or CV or a interview or whatever, so with my friends or family i can tell i am a pro or so high level, but if i enroll in a course or a competition or exhibition and needed to fill about my level then what i have to choose?

I agree that not all pros are good enough, some pros i really don't like their work and even some non pros can do better than some pros, and about getting or earning money also not a final judgment, many here told me to open a studio and then i can earn a lot, will that making me a pro automatically then?

Also if a website asking for professional level to be listed even as upcoming photographer, or to be a professional to list you as a master, is that mean professional level will make it easier for me in many websites or profiles about photography? and many competition has 2 parts, one for professional and one for non-professional, can we submit in professional part if we are not pros and they didn't ask about pro proof?

I consider a professional photographer to be someone whose main or only source of income is from their photography.

I consider a semi-pro to be someone whose partial source of income is from their photography.

However, I don't think that these labels necessarily indicate a photographers skill or talent level, they just tell you what a person does - or partially does - for a living.

When I see someone who is very good at photography but does not make any money off of it, I consider them a serious hobbyist.
