PCB posted this comment over on FM earlier today:

"I've had so much trouble communicating exact frame geometry and requirements I am now in the process of developing our own frame design and having it made by our excellent China metal vendor. This version will be quite different and will be available with 7mm shafts and a host of very tangible improvements I won't go into at this point. This is probably about 90 days out."

Pity. The PLMs are getting very good reviews from users and are cheap enough that I was hoping to get one (or two) with the 7mm shaft to try with my Elinchroms.

Something to look forward to come spring, I guess.

I was planning to buy two of the large silver PLMs when the 7mm shaft version became available too. I can wait for spring but it sure does get tiring to watch PCB flounder around in his missed availability dates! Which will be available first, the PLM with 7mm shaft or the Einstein? :D

Trick question, Mark. The answer is, neither. The perpetual motion machine will be available first.

I can wait 3 months. This (in my opinion) is a very promising product and it will definitely improve the light output in my strobe. I'm excited!

The 7mm feature was aimed at capturing the european market, namely elinchrom who sells the octobank at a whopping $800 +. the PLM is a cost saving light director that uses your monolight and makes it significantly more efficient.

the plm was designed to have an 8mm shaft, which is incompatible with the elinchrom strobes without doing a little DIY modification. In addition, PCB wanted to redesign the umbrella and shaft to make it more rugged in use.

so in summary: target market to capture: elinchrom. efficient light modifier, competes against the softlighter II as sold at B&H.

Thanks for the info Dave. I've looked at the PLM's many times and often thought about just grabbing one to use with the secondary umbrella mount on the Elinchrom's but now I'll wait and see what happens with a 7mm umbrella shaft.
