Hi folks,

I’m after some info please.

I have a Canon Speedlite 430EX flashgun. Unfortunately this is being commandeered for my son and I am being bought a cheaper one from the wife for Christmas.

Now, it’s got to be a Canon fit (I have a Canon 450D) and must act in the same way as my 430EX dedicated flash that I am giving up (reluctantly!)

I am in the UK. I have a subscription to Photoplus and one of the ones I saw in the back section is a Nissin Di622 Speedlite for £99.95 which is as much money as the wife will run to.

Has anyone had any experience of this flashgun, good or bad or can anyone else recommend another with the full up/down/side-to-side swivel action too?

I really would appreciate your help on this as I need to get something ordered quickly.

Kind regards

Ian

Have you considered a second hand 430ex, it would be about that amount via eBay.

If it has to be new, have you considered one of the Chinese ones, you only get manual control on the YN460 and YN462, but, I did read Yongnuo had brought out an E-TTL version. Not going to be upto the quality of the 430ex though.

I also used to own the Sunpak flash. All it lacked was manual power and no swivel. Did have E-TTL and FEC.

Just remembered as it only takes two AA batteries it can take a few seconds to charge after a full power flash.

Thanks for the reply Big G. Ideally I want to get everything I would have done from my 430EX. The Nissin one seemed to indicate it had all the swivel etc but haven't a clue if it has the functions though.

I was watching a few 430EXs on Ebay and the one I watched on Sunday ended up going for about £160.00 + P&P so that was never gonna be a winner :(

I appreciate any help and advice though as I am a bit of a numpty on these things. My 430EX slotted in, I turned it on and used it. My boy uses the settings more than I ever did but I do not want to short-change myself

Thanks

I have a Nissin Di622 and am very happy with it. It works very well in ETTL.

It does have two drawbacks that you will need to consider. It cannot be triggered off camera by a radio trigger (there is a mod but it would void warranty). It does have an optical trigger but this is only activated by a second ETTL flash. Second, it does not have high speed sync so you are limited to the cameras maximum normal flash sync speed (usually around 1/200).

It is very possible you don't need either of those options.

Excellent news antisoma... what's it like recharging? Does it take 4 batteries or two?

It takes four batteries. I don't have the flash to hand but the recycle rate at full power is probably around 5 seconds.

Here is a review that seems pretty accurate.
