Personally go for the 24-70L. You obviously have full frame in mind so go for it. I would never pay the dollars for a 17-55. Yes it has IS but really at that focul length its just a plus. IS is great for long telephoto zooms ie 100+. But anything lower than 100 doesnt really need to have IS built into it (plus you will have a 7D and you can increase the iso if you need to shoot in lower light). Justifing the 1000 price tag for the 17-55 is tough because its so close to the price of quality built L lenses. Yes he could sell the 17-55 but hes not going to recoup all 1000 back. Do yourself a favor and buy the 28-70L or the 17-40L. You will get great optics plus a durably lense which you can take out there and not worry that it isnt as tough as the body you have. You will save yourself money in the long run and the hassle of having to sell off lenses.

While I understand your point about L quality glass/IS and the price of the 17-55 etc, I'm not really sure the 24-70 is the best solution for the OP as he/she wants the lens for landscape photography. 24mm on a crop sensor isn't all that wide and may be quite restrictive. Obviously its all down to the individual and their photography style, but something to consider.

I just read that he may go for FF in the future (missed that before).

Then the 17-40 and 85 1.8 combo suggested above is probably the best bet. :)

17-55 2.8 IS if he wants a "do it all" now that he can sell later.

I have used most all the xxD bodies with various lenses. I currently shoot with 40D and 7D. I have also used many lenses over the years (including the (24-70) and came up with a dilemma when trying to find a good short focal lenth zoom lens for my crop cameras. That is until the 17-55 f2.8 IS efs lens came out. I bought one and retired my 24 -70L. My 16-35 L was better but has been resting for a long time now. I really like the 17-55. I have had absolutely no problems with it and always happy with its performance. It and a Canon 100 -400 L IS are my most used lenses. I have others but these are the basic and then I add others for specific uses. Sooo, I guess you can tell I recomend the 17 -55 2.8 IS PS: the 7D needs a good lens to take full advantage of the resolution it has !

I def agree with your post. I merely mention the L options just because the OP said they were thinking of going FF. Someone mentioned a great deal. Going with the 17-40 and buy the 85 prime. I think that would be a great setup which would be FF proof for the future.

I think if you shop carefully you might be able to get the 17-40 and 85/1.8 for not much more than the 17-55 alone would cost you. That would be better choices of lenses for each purpose.

I am 17-40L lover and I've had the lens for more 3years. It was on my crop body 90% of the time!
I love the ease of use, speed, colors, and even the macro function.

Yes f/4 is slow(er), especially after you get a taste of fast 1.4 lens :) Bring a flash and you should be good!

After picking up a 17-55 I immediately sold my 24-70. It just makes more sense on a crop body.
