Ok guys photography is my hobby, and I've learned that the more I do and the more I buy, the more I want to shoot. Now my dilemma has always been what to shoot and how. I try not to stick with one style of shooting or one genre of subject. My biggest problem with this is lack of funds to travel(college student). So I'm stuck in more southeastern PA location, which I am content with. BUUUUT long story short, I'm looking for sites that give tutorials or Ideas to people that are above beginners. If you google "photography tutorials" it's always like How to use M mode, or how to check exposure, etc. I found one single site (http://photo.tutsplus.com/ (external link)) that has some stuff geared towards the competent photographer, but it's not much. Although it does has some cool other sister sites for video, web, flash, and graphical tutorials. Anyways, do you guys know of any? I love going on 1x.com and looking at the beautiful photography for inspiration, but I know alot of it is either Setup or Creative Edit. What sites do you guys know of? or books?

Hello there gorgon - ah yes, I remember my student days last century . Thanks for posting what can be an interesting topic.

To answer your question about "What to shoot?"...... that's an easy one: EVERYTHING. You're still in the stages of developing your style. It is something that will mature, morph and transition over a period of years. It will be influenced by your mood, venue, position in life, both geographic and financial.

I love variety in my work, but to me it's really all about the light. The most mundane noonday blandly lighted shot can be transformed into interesting contrasts, shades and textures by a more interesting "first light" or late evening light.

Conside the angle of the light and it's intensity, relative to the time of day. Make your mind a visual time machine. Picture things outside the box. Therein will lie much variety that others may not see, that may make YOUR PICTURES something truly unique.

People will shortly chime in with suggested tutorials. Google Dr. Brown. He has a number of online videos on PS technique. I've also heard that Lynda.com is excellent although it is subscription.

If you want to look for inspiration from the work of others, check out folks' online galleries. One such place is Pbase.com. It is worldwide and has an unbelievable variety of work at just about every level and topic. I think you will enjoy it. - Stu
