I don't have a 1D but if you are thinking of getting a grip for you XSi, Do It.The $60 I spent on an aftermarket grip was well worth it.

Can't compare it to a 1-series because I don't have one, but I shoot my xsi with a grip and it makes all the difference - very comfortable for me. And the plus is that if you need to travel light you can take the grip off and you have a camera barely larger than a point and shoot.

What sort of comparison are you looking for?

I got the canon grip for my t1i and absolutely love it. Really makes it very comfortable to hold if you have larger hands and much easier to do "portrait" orientation shots. Not to mention, double battery life!

I have used a 350d with a grip for a long time and it is much better with the grip although I think it's worth getting a canon grip rther than 3rd party, the buttons help!
But..
I also have a 1ds and it is not at all the same beast, the 350 even with grip feels much smaller and more insubstantial than the 1ds, but there are situations when it is better t have a 350d than a pro model although then i would probably take off the grip too.
however, if you cant, or dont want to afford a 1 series then the 350d takes great pictures when used well with good glass and that is the endgame right.

I have a 1D and an XSI (that used to have a grip). The Rebel + grip is just a little smaller and thinner. The part your hand grips feels much chunkier on the 1D.

The 1D body is about 2x the weight of a rebel + grip.

The Rebel feels great with a grip but it defeats the whole purpose of having a small DSLR for me. Now I use the Rebel with small primes and no flash as a lightweight package.

Well the 1D series are pretty massive (can be a pro or a con) and have better AF, better IQ, better ergonomics, basically better overall. You XSi is inexpensive.

There's your comparison. ;)

I have both the 1D Classic and Rebel XT and the XT is awesome for grab and go photo's. But I kid you not, the XT doesn't have the same feel with or without the grip as the 1D. The Rebel almost feels like a disposable camera compared to how the 1D feels and handles.;)

My sister, the professional baker and cake decorator once told me that my camera takes great pics. My reply was that I thought her oven baked great cakes.

The grip on my 450D is a drastic improvement with its size/weight. But, it won't turn it into a solid build higher end Canon body. I do think I'll keep it when I do upgrade bodies...just to have a light body with decent IQ I can use when it makes sense.

I had a gripped 30d...and that even felt like a toy compared to the 1D bodies. Once you've held the chunk of magnesium in your hands, you really don't want anything else.

grip is great if you plan on using a flash and a large lens (for balance)

otherwise, I take it off. a naked camera and a small prime is great for just snapping without being in everyones face, so to speak.
