Stimpy.....and mcgong--
I saw that you are expecting delivery of the 10-22 soon! I'd be interested in your impressions when you get a chance to use it.
Seems to me, I should get the 10-22 after all. Gets a lot of favorable reviews and comments, so to speak.

I had a similar issue and I ended up with the 10-22 which should arrive in the next hour or so. I have a 24-70 instead of the 24-105, and when I decide to go Full Frame, I plan on keeping my crop body for a 2nd body and using it for my 10-22 and 70-200, at least until I can get the 16-35mm. It was a tough decision because I, probably like you, wanted to stick with L glass, but everyone said the 10-22 is a very sharp lens, so I am going to give it a try.

the 10-22 on a cropper is like using the 17-40 on FF. when you do move to FF that is the camera you'll want to do you WA work with :D.

It was delivered last night. If I can talk my wife into letting me use it early I might get a chance to shoot with it this weekend. It is supposed to be a Xmas gift so we will see how that goes. :D

I took my 10-22mm out for a test run and looove it. I doubt this lens will leave my 450D very often. I really missed having UWA from my 35mm days. It seems my useful than just a UWA with the 22mm on the long side on my crop body. Very impressed with the build quality, USM, and the IQ.

Here are some pics.

Very nice, Stimpy!
I have to decide within the next couple of days whether or not to pull the trigger!
The problem for me is that I was planning to trade in the 17-35 for this lens...but I went into my Lightroom folder this weekend and found that I actually use the 17-35 MUCH more than I had thought. And it has been on the camera for many of my favorite recent shots. So....tough decision.
(And....I read here that there is a possible new lens coming out in 2010--a 14-24L. Hmmm....)

I think you really need to decide if you want the wider side of the UWA or not. I would look at the focal lengths in the shots you took. Find out if you use > 22 very often. For me it was a no brainer because I'll use the wider side a ton.

It does make you look at things in a different way. Opens up a completely different world.

I did that....and I was kind of surprised to find I use the extremes (17 and 35) the most. Totally inconclusive. Though I know that one of my main lenses in the film days was a 20mm fixed lens! And I'm nowhere near that at this point with a crop camera and a 17-35.

I have both and I almost always use the 10-22 for rig shots of vehicles. With a 10-22 on a crop-body you can keep the weight down. I'm no expert on image quality, but if I had the choice to use our 5D and the 16-35 or a 40D and the 10-22, I think that the lighter combo would have the better chance of giving me a sharp photo.
I love my 10-22, but I'm easy to please.

don't buy ef-s lenses even if you only have 1% chance of going ff

Why? My 10-22mm is going for more used than I paid for it new. Some EF-S lenses hold their value and you won't lose that much when you upgrade. It would be silly to miss out on one of the best lenses for a crop body just because you might go FF some day.

And deny yourself the capability to go really wide, just in case? I'm afraid your advice makes no sense.

I wouldn't be too concerned about choosing the 10-22 based on a potentila move to FF. You'll sell it for about what you buy it for now. I had both the 17-40 and the 10-22 on the 40D and the 10-22 is a better choice. Sold it when I got a 5D with no problem.

There's plenty of other threads about the 10-22.
Just do a search on the forum.

In a nutshell though the 10-22 is brilliant.
It's so close to being an L lens, it should be. Trouble is that would make it more expensive,
