I need some recommendations for a new bag.. I have a Canon backpack that I'm using right now, as well as a small shoulder bag for when I don't need much equipment. I'm going to Jerusalem in January for a month and I am looking for a cheap (approx <$80) bag. I like the idea of a backpack with side entry, as the bag I have now, i have to take it off to access the camera or any lenses. I'm partial to the fact of it having a compartment for a laptop (I have a 14" laptop). I don't have too much equipment, so it doesn't have to be too big, maybe 3 lenses and a flash, other than the lens mounted. I'm leaning toward a backpack because of the fact that I will be doing a lot of hiking. I like the idea of having a compartment for random stuff.. (water bottle, GPS logger, etc..) Do you have any recommendations for me? I like the idea of ebay or used, so I can get it a little bit cheaper. If anyone has a bag that they don't want anymore, that would be an option too ;)

Would a Kata DR series be within your budget?

I'm not familiar with Kata's U.S. prices, but the DR models are quite cheap as backpacks go. All but the smallest have a notebook space and they should just about take what you need.

Versa bag.. a good clone copy of Crumpler 7MDH bag.. $19.99 plus $9.99 shipping. They have other colors..
I have it in Black and Red, they are good as I also have the real Crumpler 7MDH so I was able to compare them.

I just took a look at the dr-465 and it looks like a good contender.. I love the idea of the camera being able to hook onto the backpack instead of being around my neck all the time.. The original strap has been getting to my neck lately :( Anyone have experience with the 465? Do you know if a gripped xsi would fit?

The 465 doesn't have a notebook space. As I mentioned yesterday, all but the smallest (the 465/465i) have one, so you would want the 466 or 467 versions. Have you looked at Kata's website yet? It has the information that you need about sizing and features. The 466/466i would carry your gear.

When you're used to Katas, the budget Lowepros just feel cheap.
