I'm very new to using a flash and was experimenting recently with using it off camera shooting items in a light tent. I placed the 580 on one side and the 430 on the other. I wanted to get a faster shutter speed by putting the flashes in hss mode but I couldn't do it. Is it even possible? When can you put the flashes in hss mode (on camera)?

How were you triggering the EX flashes? WIth another 580EX, an ST-E2 or a PW MiniTT1/FlexTT5 unit? If not, then HSS will not be possible.

Oops, sorry forgot to mention that. It was via the 7D. The flashes were in slave mode.

Then in that case, no HSS is not possible because the built-in flash does not support HSS mode.

Darn. Is the only way to do this is what you mentioned above?

Yes, use a 580EX or an ST-E2 as the master.

Is there a more "cost effective" solution other than purchasing another flash or ST-E2 or PW?

ETTL off camera cable is pretty cost effective if you don't mind having one of the flashes wired.

I kind of do mind because I don't know what the distance will be the flash will be at compared to the camera.
What's the max sync speed of Cyber Syncs?

CyberSync remotes still won't let you shoot in HSS mode. You'll still be limited to the max sync speed of the camera.

Why do you need faster shutter speeds with the light tent?

I only use HSS outside, and on the odd occasion with a BRIGHT window in the scene.

The 7D has built in wireless flash trigger similar to having a master flash on top. It should be able to control 3 groups and the 7D manuals states that slaves are controlled by pulsing light from the popup flash not IR like how the 580ex and the ST-E2.

Yes, that's well established. However the point of the post is that you can NOT use HSS when you use the 7D's pop-up as the "master" .

Well like I mentioned, I'm new to this :D So 1/250 is fast enough to use indoors or for what I'm doing?
Is the only time you use hss is outdoors?

outdoor middle of the day is probably the best use for HSS when you want to fully light up your subject and maintain a great exposure for the scene (aka sky, etc..) around the subject
